The other received no reply.

Life moved.

Addresses changed.

Men married.

Children were born.

Some veterans wanted to reconnect.

Others needed distance from the past.

Bear didn't resent Thomas for disappearing.

He simply hoped the medic had found peace.

Over the years, he sometimes searched for him.

At veteran gatherings.

Through old acquaintances.

Later, through records and online groups.

But Thomas Miller was a common name.

And Bear never found the right one.

Now, more than half a century later, the man's widow was standing inside a diner, begging strangers to pretend they were her sons.

Bear looked toward Ruth's photograph.

Then he made himself a private promise.

He would not allow gratitude to become an excuse for recklessness.

Thomas had saved his life through courage and skill.

If Bear intended to honor him, he would need to do more than arrive at a house surrounded by motorcycles and frighten a few men away.

He needed to make sure Ruth's home was protected by something that would still exist after the bikers rode away.

He needed to help her find the truth.

And he needed to do it properly.

By the time Ruth finished her soup, Luke's sister had called back.

Her name was Nora Ellis.

She was forty-four, an attorney who practiced property law and civil litigation in Knoxville.

She had grown up around motorcycles, loved her older brother, and possessed an extremely limited tolerance for men who believed intimidating older people was a clever business strategy.

Luke put the phone on speaker.

Nora's voice filled the booth.

β€œRuth, can you hear me?”

β€œYes, dear.”

β€œI've reviewed the documents Luke sent.”

Ruth tightened her grip on the phone.

β€œAre they taking my house?”

β€œI'm not prepared to say who holds valid title until I've examined the underlying records. But the letter you've received is not, by itself, a lawful eviction order.”

Ruth looked toward Bear.

He nodded encouragingly.

Nora continued.

β€œThere's a recently recorded deed purporting to transfer the property to Silver Creek Property Holdings.”

Ruth's face turned white.

β€œI never sold it.”

β€œI understand.”

The attorney's voice remained calm.

β€œAnd that's exactly why we need to investigate.”

Luke leaned closer.

β€œCan they show up today?”

β€œThey can come to the property. That doesn't mean they can lawfully force Ruth out of her home.”
