The young mechanic agreed.

He replied asking the sender to identify themselves and arrange a formal transfer of documents.

No answer came.

Then another message appeared.

Your father is about to lose the garage. Friday is too late.

The son stared.

He hadn't known the business was in financial trouble.

The thought frightened him.

Iron Hollow wasn't simply a building.

It contained his childhood.

His father's life.

And memories of the only family he'd known before leaving home.

He wanted to help.

But he also understood the risk.

So he made a compromise.

He would go near the salvage yard in daylight, remain on the public road, and contact the sender only if the situation appeared safe.

He told his wife where he intended to be.

Shared his location.

And promised not to enter the property.

Then he prepared the red tin.

Inside he placed his silver ring, the old photograph, and a letter to his father.

He handed it to his wife.

She looked confused.

"Why are you giving me this?"

He smiled faintly.

"Because if this turns into another mess, I want him to hear my side without somebody else telling the story first."

She frowned.

"You're scaring me."

He took her hand.

"I'll be careful."

Then he looked toward their daughter.

The little girl was drawing at the motel table.

He lowered his voice.

"If I don't come back when I say I will, take this to Iron Hollow."

His wife stared.

Then nodded reluctantly.

She wished he'd abandon the trip.

But she understood what the truth meant to him.

He'd spent eleven years living beneath an accusation his father believed.

Now there might be a chance to end it.

The next morning, he kissed his wife.

Hugged his daughter.

And left the motel.

He promised to return before lunch.

He never did.

Back inside Iron Hollow, the old mechanic listened to the mother's account through the phone.

By the time she finished, his face had gone pale.

The young mechanics gathered nearby.

Nobody interrupted.

The old man looked toward the little girl, who was sitting on a stool with the red tin on her lap.

Then he asked the mother what the police knew.

She explained that she'd reported her husband missing after he failed to return and stopped answering calls.

His phone had last transmitted a location near the industrial outskirts.

Later, a roadside worker found a damaged piece of motorcycle equipment near a service road leading toward the old salvage yard.
