A dark smear on the concrete.
Nearby lay a small cloth backpack.
The search team documented the location.
A responder called out.
"Can anyone hear me?"
For several seconds, there was no answer.
Then came a faint sound.
Not a voice.
A movement.
Something scraping against concrete.
The responder called again.
"Fire rescue! If you're inside, make a noise!"
The old mechanic stood at the staging area, listening to the radio traffic.
His heart pounded.
Then a voice crackled through the speaker.
"Possible person inside. Requesting entry team and medical support."
The father closed his eyes.
For a moment, he couldn't breathe.
Then another transmission came.
"Male adult located. Conscious but disoriented."
The old biker grabbed the side of his truck.
The search officer turned toward him.
The old man whispered.
"Is it him?"
The officer listened.
Then nodded cautiously.
"The description matches. They're confirming."
Several minutes passed.
They felt endless.
Then the radio crackled again.
"Subject confirms first name. Appears to be the missing rider."
The old mechanic covered his face.
For eleven years, he'd wanted to hear that his son was alive.
Now he finally had.
But the relief was mixed with fear.
The young man was injured.
He'd spent more than a day missing.
And the rescue personnel were preparing to transport him for medical care.
The father looked toward the old building.
For a moment, he wanted to run down the slope.
He wanted to hold his son.
Tell him he was sorry.
And explain that he'd been wrong to choose the business partner's accusations over him.
But the search officer asked him to remain where he was until the rescue was complete.
The old mechanic nodded.
He waited.
And for the first time in his life, waiting felt like the hardest thing he'd ever been asked to do.
The ambulance reached the staging area shortly before sunset.
The old mechanic stood beside his truck as the medical team brought his son toward the vehicle.
He saw a face he recognized instantly.
Older.
Exhausted.
Marked by the strain of the accident.
But unmistakable.
His son.
The young man lay secured on a stretcher, wearing a protective collar while medics monitored his condition. He had a bandage near his forehead, and one arm was supported against his body. His eyes were partly open, but he seemed confused by the activity around him.
The father took one hesitant step forward.
