The billionaire placed his hand on a stack of hundred-dollar bills and laughed directly into the Black janitor's face.

"Ten thousand dollars."

His voice carried across the enormous Manhattan boardroom.

"That's what I'll give you if you can read one paragraph of Portuguese."

The woman stood perfectly still.

She was thirty-four years old, Black American, with deep-brown skin, expressive dark eyes, and long black braids neatly tied behind her head. She wore a clean, all-white janitorial uniform consisting of a short-sleeved white work shirt, white trousers, and worn black nonslip shoes.

A small identification badge hung from her chest.

In one hand, she held a folded gray cleaning cloth.

In the other, she carried a worn black notebook.

She had entered the boardroom less than three minutes earlier to empty the wastebaskets and collect several abandoned coffee cups.

Now six wealthy executives were staring at her as though she were the evening's entertainment.

The room occupied the seventy-second floor of a Manhattan skyscraper. Floor-to-ceiling windows revealed the New York City skyline, thousands of illuminated offices, and the distant silhouette of the Empire State Building.

Warm recessed ceiling lights reflected across the polished conference table.

Expensive leather chairs surrounded it.

Silver water pitchers stood beside crystal glasses.

Several confidential business contracts lay open on black leather writing pads.

And scattered across the table were enormous bundles of genuine American currency.

The stacks were part of an extravagant private presentation planned by the company's chairman to celebrate a major international transaction. His executives had opposed displaying so much cash, calling it unnecessary, but he enjoyed theatrical demonstrations of wealth.

He wanted visiting investors to see what his company could command.

Tonight, he intended to complete a nine-hundred-million-dollar agreement with a Brazilian infrastructure consortium.

It would be the largest transaction of his career.

For thirty-eight years, he had built his business from a small engineering company into an international corporation developing advanced water-purification systems, modular pumping equipment, and industrial monitoring technology.

He was sixty-seven.

White American.

Tall, broad-shouldered, with neatly combed silver-gray hair and a face shaped by decades of command.
