At first, Bruno may stay in his retreat long after the machinery stops.
Later, perhaps he emerges almost immediately.
The floor becomes still.
His head appears.
He listens.
Then he walks back to his cot.
That would show that Bruno is learning something important.
The sensation has an ending.
One Quiet Evening, Something Changes Again
Laundry begins in another part of the building.
The floor produces the faintest vibration.
Bruno notices.
His head lifts from the cot.
His eyes open.
He waits.
The vibration continues.
Bruno shifts one paw.
Then he sighs.
His head lowers.
He remains where he is.
For another dog, the moment would mean nothing.
For Bruno, staying on the cot while the floor moves beneath him could represent an enormous step.
The Goal Is an Ordinary Floor
Bruno does not need to love vibration.
He does not need to stand beside industrial machinery.
He simply needs the ground beneath him to stop controlling what his body does.
A machine starts.
The floor hums.
Bruno notices.
Then life continues.
That is the future everyone wants for him.
For Now, Bruno Still Feels the Threat Before Anyone Else Notices It
He is asleep on the cot.
The industrial washer reaches its spin cycle.
There is a low mechanical hum.
Then the floor begins vibrating.
Barely enough for a person standing nearby to notice.
Bruno's eyes open.
His head rises.
His paws spread.
Suddenly, he jumps down.
He runs toward the corner.
His feet scramble.
His body sways sideways.
He reaches the wall.
Then drops.
His chest presses hard against the concrete.
His legs fold low around him.
The vibration continues.
Bruno does not move.
The machine begins slowing.
The hum fades.
The floor gradually becomes still.
Bruno remains flattened for several more seconds.
Then his head rises.
Slowly, his body follows.
The building around him has not changed.
Nothing has fallen.
Nothing is coming toward him.
But for those few moments, a vibration most people would barely notice was enough to make Bruno's entire body prepare for something it could not see.
And until Bruno learns that a moving floor can end without everything around him coming down, even the smallest vibration may keep sending him back to the corner where all he knows to do is press himself against the ground and wait for stillness.
