The headmaster wrote something.

“The tray fell?”

“She threw it.”

The blonde said:

“I did not throw it.”

The Black senior looked at her.

“Yes, you did.”

“You let go.”

“And then you threw it.”

The brunette muttered:

“It was already falling.”

The headmaster spoke sharply.

“Enough.”

Silence returned.

The Black senior continued.

“I went for my bag.”

“And?”

“She shoved me.”

The blonde looked away.

“I fell.”

“Were you injured?”

“No.”

“Then?”

“I tried to pick up my bag.”

“She kicked it.”

The dean asked:

“Why?”

The blonde stared at the table.

The Black senior answered:

“She wanted me to fight.”

The headmaster looked toward the blonde.

“We will ask her later.”

The Black senior continued.

“The zipper broke.”

“My training stuff came out.”

“She asked if I could fight.”

“Then she tried to slap me.”

“Did her hand make contact?”

“No.”

“What did you do?”

“I caught her wrist.”

The girl hesitated.

“Turned.”

“Moved her past me.”

“Did you intend to put her into the table?”

“No.”

The blonde laughed.

“She slammed me.”

The Black senior’s eyes hardened.

“You didn’t even fall.”

The room went quiet.

She lowered her gaze.

The headmaster asked:

“Then what?”

“I released her.”

“Did you strike her?”

“No.”

“Kick her?”

“No.”

“Push her?”

“No.”

“Threaten her?”

“No.”

“Did you tell her you were a boxer?”

“No.”

The headmaster stopped writing.

“Why?”

That question surprised her.

“Why what?”

“Why didn’t you tell her?”

The Black senior stared.

“She knew.”

“You said you didn’t know how.”

“She knew enough.”

The coach stepped forward.

“She knew enough to provoke her.”

The headmaster turned.

“What do you mean?”

The coach looked toward the Black senior.

The girl’s stomach tightened.

They had discussed this privately.

She had never wanted it outside the gym.

The coach asked:

“Can I?”

The Black senior considered.

Then nodded.

The coach addressed the headmaster.

“She has already accepted a full athletic scholarship.”

The dean looked impressed.

The headmaster smiled slightly.

“Congratulations.”

The Black senior did not smile.

The coach continued:

“The agreement contains a disciplinary clause.”

The headmaster’s smile disappeared.

“What kind?”

“Any school suspension for fighting or retaliatory violence before enrollment may trigger scholarship review.”

Silence.

The dean looked at the two girls.

The Black senior saw the moment the significance reached him.

The coach continued:

“She has been avoiding conflict because she has something concrete to lose.”

The headmaster looked back at the Black senior.
