A few minutes later, the CEO returned to the subject.

He asked her to pronounce an Arabic word.

She politely declined.

He made another joke.

One of the businessmen told him to leave the staff alone.

That should have ended it too.

Instead the CEO took an envelope from his briefcase.

Now it sat on the table.

โ€œOne million dollars,โ€ he said again.

The waitress looked at him.

โ€œCash?โ€

A few men blinked.

The CEOโ€™s smile widened.

Finally.

Engagement.

โ€œNo.โ€

He tapped the envelope.

โ€œA certified instrument.โ€

She already knew it was not one million dollars.

She had seen the envelope earlier when he opened the briefcase.

It contained copies of escrow instructions.

But she did not care about the wager.

โ€œWould you honor it?โ€

The CEO laughed.

โ€œIf you speak Arabic well enough to impress this table, yes.โ€

The senior chairman looked toward him.

โ€œYou should not make wagers with employees.โ€

He spoke in Arabic.

The CEO answered in the same language.

โ€œIt is harmless. She does not understand.โ€

The waitress heard every word.

Another businessman murmured:

โ€œThis is unnecessary.โ€

The CEO waved him off.

Then turned to the waitress.

โ€œWell?โ€

She placed the tray on the service stand.

The room changed slightly.

Not because anyone understood why.

Because she stopped behaving like a server waiting for permission to leave.

She stood straighter.

Her eyes moved once toward the leather folder.

Then toward the senior chairman.

And in clear, measured Arabic she said:

โ€œุฃู†ุง ุฃูู‡ู… ูƒู„ ูƒู„ู…ุฉุŒ ูˆุงู„ุนู‚ุฏ ุฃู…ุงู…ูƒู… ู„ูŠุณ ุงู„ู†ุณุฎุฉ ุงู„ุชูŠ ูˆุงูู‚ุชู… ุนู„ูŠู‡ุง.โ€

Nobody moved.

The CEOโ€™s smile remained on his face for a fraction too long.

Then disappeared.

The senior chairman turned slowly toward her.

One of the younger executives lowered his glass.

Another whispered something under his breath.

The CEO stared.

The waitress continued in English.

โ€œI said: I understand every word, and the contract in front of you is not the version you approved.โ€

The silence became absolute.

The CEO stood.

Not quickly.

But enough to make the chair legs scrape the floor.

โ€œWhat did you say?โ€

The waitress looked toward the contract.

โ€œThe indemnification schedule in the English execution copy is different from the Arabic summary your legal adviser discussed at 7:18.โ€

Nobody looked at the clock.

They looked at her.

She continued.

โ€œThe voting-rights language in Section Twelve also does not match what your guests believe they are signing.โ€

The CEOโ€™s face changed.

His confidence did not vanish all at once.

First came disbelief.
