The normal sounds of a hospital corridor outside.

Charlie remained at the foot of the bed through much of it.

Sometimes his eyes were open.

Sometimes closed.

Every so often, the boy moved and Charlie looked up.

Then the room settled again.

Eventually, the Visit Had to End

That was the part no one could avoid.

Charlie could not remain beneath the hospital bed indefinitely.

The boy's treatment would continue.

The family's routine would remain different from what it had once been.

And Charlie would have to leave the room.

When it was time, the family gave him a moment to get up rather than abruptly pulling him from his resting place.

Charlie rose slowly.

He Looked Back Toward the Bed

There was no need to decide what that glance meant.

The bed had been the center of his attention for most of the visit.

Looking back was consistent with everything he had done since entering the room.

Then Charlie left with the family.

The space beneath the foot of the hospital bed was empty again.

But the Visit Had Given Everyone a New Picture of Charlie's Routine

At home, his behavior might look different.

In the hospital, with the boy finally nearby again, Charlie had narrowed his world to a few square feet.

He did not choose the comfortable chair.

He did not spend the visit wandering.

He did not demand constant touch.

He simply placed himself beneath the bed and stayed there.

There May Be More Visits

If the child's care plan and hospital policies allow it, Charlie may have other opportunities to spend time with him.

Nobody can know whether he will choose the same place next time.

Perhaps he will become more comfortable in the room.

Perhaps he will use the chair.

Perhaps he will remain beside the family.

Or perhaps he will walk directly back to the foot of the bed.

The important thing is not recreating the scene for emotional effect.

It is allowing the interaction to happen naturally while keeping both the child and Charlie safe and comfortable.

For One Visit, Charlie Had Already Chosen

There was a chair beside the bed.

There were people in the room.

There were other places where an 8-year-old Golden Retriever could have stretched out comfortably.

Charlie chose none of them.

He squeezed beneath the foot of the hospital bed.

Curled himself beside the little pair of slippers.

Rested his muzzle against the metal frame.

And slept.

Then the bed moved.

Charlie's eyes opened.

His head rose immediately.

He looked up.

When everything became still again, he lowered his muzzle back onto the bar and closed his eyes.

A few minutes later, another small movement woke him.

Again, Charlie looked up.

Again, he stayed.

Nobody can say exactly what Charlie understood about why his young owner was in that hospital bed.

But throughout the visit, he made one choice over and over without anyone asking him to:

wherever the boy's bed was, Charlie wanted his resting place to be directly beneath it.
