Step 1 – Chill the Serving Glass

Place a small glass or dessert cup in the freezer for about 15 minutes.

This is optional, but it slows the melting process and gives you more time to enjoy the temperature contrast.

Step 2 – Add the Gelato

Place one large scoop of vanilla gelato in the center of the chilled glass.

Keep it rounded rather than flattening it. The domed shape lets the espresso flow naturally down the sides.

Step 3 – Brew the Espresso

Prepare one fresh shot of espresso.

Do this only after your gelato is already in the glass.

You want to pour the espresso while it is still very hot and aromatic.

Step 4 – Pour Immediately

Pour the espresso directly over the center of the gelato.

The exterior should begin melting immediately, creating a pale coffee-cream sauce around the bottom of the glass.

Step 5 – Add Optional Toppings

Finish with crushed amaretti, chopped pistachios, caramel, cinnamon, or another topping if desired.

If using coffee liqueur, add only a small splash so it does not overwhelm the espresso.

Step 6 – Serve Immediately

Affogato waits for no one.
