The socket struck the driveway before the Black man understood why the police officer was running toward him.

It bounced once against the concrete, rolled beneath the glossy black muscle car, and disappeared somewhere behind the front tire.

The Black man straightened from the open engine bay.

He still held a greasy shop rag in one hand.

A ratchet rested beside the carburetor.

The hood of the restored classic car stood high above him, catching the bright late-morning sunlight. A red toolbox sat open near his white sneakers, sockets arranged carefully in black plastic rows.

Everything about the morning had been ordinary.

Until the officer crossed the lawn.

“STEP AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE!”

The Black man stared at him.

“What?”

The officer did not slow.

Dark navy uniform.

Utility belt.

Radio.

Body camera.

Short brown hair.

Broad shoulders.

Face already tightened with anger.

Behind him, a black-and-white patrol SUV sat diagonally beside the curb with its emergency lights flashing.

Red.

Blue.

Red.

Blue.

The Black man looked toward his own house.

Then toward the officer.

“Officer, this is my—”

The officer grabbed the front of his oversized white T-shirt.

Hard.

The Black man stumbled backward into the open driver-side door.

Metal knocked against his hip.

Several neighbors who had stepped onto nearby porches gasped.

One woman immediately raised her phone.

The officer shoved again.

“Hands where I can see them.”

“They are where you can see them.”

“Don't argue with me.”

The Black man lifted both hands away from the car.

One still held the gray shop rag.

His neck tattoos and muscular forearms were fully visible beneath the loose shirt. A black knit beanie covered his hair despite the warmth. A silver chain rested against his collar.

His voice stayed controlled.

“This is my driveway.”

The officer stepped closer.

“This car was reported stolen.”

The Black man stared.

“No, it wasn't.”

The officer's expression hardened.

“You telling me how to do my job?”

“No. I'm telling you that's my car.”

The officer looked toward the open engine bay.

Then the tools.

Then back at him.

“Registration.”

“In the glove box.”

“Don't reach.”

“You asked for it.”

“I said don't reach.”

The Black man lowered his hand again.

The officer glanced at the expensive watch on his wrist.

Then the chain.

Then the car.

The sequence was quick.

But the Black man noticed.

He noticed everything.

That was his profession.

He said:

“My wallet is inside the house.”

The officer laughed once.

“Convenient.”

“My driver's license is in it.”

“Of course.”

“I've been working on the car for an hour.”

“Step away.”

“I'm already away.”

“Further.”

The Black man stepped backward.

The officer followed.

Then looked down at the red toolbox.
