Daisy is a 6-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier who has spent a long time in the shelter without securing a rescue placement.

Now she is approaching a euthanasia deadline.

The exact date and time were not provided and should be confirmed directly with the shelter.

But recently, something inside Daisy’s kennel has changed.

She has started eating very little.

And when a bowl of food is placed inside, Daisy does something unusual with it.

She lowers her muzzle to the bowl.

Instead of finishing the food, she begins pushing.

A little at a time.

Across the kennel floor.

Toward the door.

Daisy keeps nudging until the bowl reaches the gap beneath the kennel gate.

Then she pushes again.

Eventually, the bowl slides completely outside.

Daisy remains inside.

She lowers herself beside the bars, places her chin almost against them, and stays there looking at the food bowl sitting just beyond the kennel door.

The Bowl Starts Inside With Daisy

At feeding time, Daisy receives her bowl like the other dogs.

But she has recently been eating very little.

No medical explanation for that change was provided.

Sometimes, instead of remaining over the food, Daisy begins using her nose to move the entire bowl.

The movement is slow.

One push.

The bowl scrapes forward.

Another push.

It moves closer to the gate.

Daisy follows.

Then she nudges it again.

She continues until the bowl reaches the narrow opening at the bottom of the kennel door.

With another push, part of it slips through.

Daisy keeps going.

Eventually, the food is outside the kennel.

The dog who was supposed to eat it is still behind the bars.

Then Daisy Lies Down

Once the bowl has crossed the gate, Daisy does not immediately walk away.

She lowers herself onto the floor directly behind it.

Her body remains inside the kennel.

Her muzzle moves toward the bottom of the bars.

Then Daisy rests her chin there.

The bowl sits on the hallway side.

Only the kennel gate separates them.

From a distance, it may look as though someone accidentally left Daisy’s food outside.

But the bowl started with her.

Daisy moved it there herself.

And she has begun repeating the behavior.

Nobody Knows Why She Does It

The behavior naturally raises questions.

Why would a dog who is already eating very little push her food away?

Why move it outside the kennel instead of simply leaving it untouched?

Why lie down beside the gate afterward?

There is not enough information to answer those questions.

It would be speculation to say Daisy is giving her food away.

It would also be inaccurate to claim she is rejecting food because she understands her euthanasia deadline.

There is no evidence she knows what the deadline means.

What can be documented is the physical sequence.

Food enters the kennel.

Daisy eats little.

She uses her muzzle to push the bowl toward the gate.

She gets it through the opening.
