The approximately four-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier lies at the bottom of a concrete drainage ditch beside a Louisiana road, surrounded by damp leaves and debris.
Her body is severely underweight.
Much of the hair across her back and face is missing in irregular patches, exposing irritated-looking skin that needs veterinary evaluation.
Most of the time, Dolly barely moves.
Then she hears something above her.
Footsteps.
A vehicle slowing.
A voice.
Her head rises.
Dolly looks toward the top of the ditch and begins pushing herself upright.
Her front paws reach the concrete edge.
She pulls.
For one second, her chest rises higher.
Then her hind legs begin to shake.
One paw slips.
The other follows.
Dolly slides backward.
Her front paws lose their grip.
Seconds later, she is lying among the wet leaves at the bottom again.
Then another sound comes from above.
And Dolly tries one more time.
No One Knows How Dolly Ended Up There
The ditch immediately creates questions.
Did Dolly fall?
Did she climb down looking for water or shelter and become too weak to get back out?
Had she already been living nearby?
Was she placed there?
Without evidence, none of those possibilities should become part of her story as fact.
The condition in which Dolly was found tells enough.
She was extremely thin.
Her skin and coat were in poor condition.
And she did not appear to have enough strength to climb out of a place a healthy adult dog might have escaped.
The Ditch Wasn't Deep Until Dolly Tried to Leave
From above, the distance could look manageable.
The concrete wall was not a towering obstacle.
But climbing requires much more than simply standing.
Dolly needed to push through her hind legs.
She needed traction.
She needed enough muscle to lift her body.
She needed her front limbs to hold while the back half followed.
For a severely depleted dog, those demands transformed a short concrete slope into a barrier.
Her Front Half Still Tried to Do the Work
Dolly's first movement was usually with her front legs.
She reached upward.
Her nails met the concrete.
Her shoulders pulled.
For a moment, she could raise part of her body.
Then the weakness behind her became obvious.
Her hindquarters trembled.
