Extra Cheesy French Onion Baked Chicken – Rich, Creamy & Loaded with Caramelized Onion Flavor
This Extra Cheesy French Onion Baked Chicken turns the flavors of classic French onion soup into a hearty, comforting chicken dinner. Juicy chicken breasts are nestled beneath deeply caramelized onions, a rich garlic cream sauce, and a generous blanket of melted Gruyère and mozzarella.
The onions are the key: cooking them slowly in butter brings out their natural sweetness and creates that unmistakable French onion flavor. Beef broth, Worcestershire, thyme, and Gruyère add savory depth, while a little cream transforms everything into a luxurious sauce.
Serve it with mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, rice, or crusty bread—you'll definitely want something to catch all that creamy onion-and-cheese sauce.

Caramelize the Onions
Step 2 – Start the Onions
Heat 2 tablespoons butter and 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium-low heat.
Add the sliced onions and salt.
Cook for approximately 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
The onions should gradually become very soft, golden brown, and sweet.
Don't rush this step by turning the heat too high.
Step 3 – Add Garlic & Thyme
Once the onions are deeply golden, add the minced garlic and thyme.
Cook for approximately 30–60 seconds, until fragrant.
Transfer most of the onions to a bowl, leaving a small amount in the skillet.
Prepare the Chicken
Step 4 – Season
Pat the chicken breasts dry.
If they're especially thick, gently pound them to an even thickness.
Season both sides with:
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Smoked paprika
- Salt
- Black pepper
Step 5 – Sear the Chicken
Increase the skillet to medium-high heat.
Add a small splash of olive oil if needed.
Sear the chicken for approximately 3–4 minutes per side, until golden.
It doesn't need to be completely cooked yet.
Transfer the chicken temporarily to a plate.
Make the Creamy French Onion Sauce
Step 6 – Add the Flour
Reduce the heat to medium-low.
Sprinkle the flour into the skillet and stir for approximately 1 minute.
Step 7 – Deglaze with Beef Broth
Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring.
Scrape the bottom of the skillet to release all the flavorful browned bits.
Add:
- Worcestershire sauce
- Dijon mustard
- Black pepper
Simmer for approximately 2–3 minutes.
Step 8 – Make It Creamy
Reduce the heat to low.
Pour in the heavy cream and stir gently.
Return the caramelized onions to the skillet.
Simmer for another 1–2 minutes until the sauce begins to thicken slightly.
Taste before adding additional salt.
Assemble the Chicken
Step 9 – Add Chicken to the Sauce
Place the seared chicken breasts into the creamy onion sauce.
Spoon plenty of caramelized onions over each piece.
If your skillet isn't oven-safe, transfer everything to the prepared baking dish.
Make It Extra Cheesy
Step 10 – Add the Cheese
Combine the Gruyère and mozzarella.
Generously cover each chicken breast with the cheese mixture.
Sprinkle Parmesan over the top.
Don't be shy—the thick cheesy topping is part of what makes this version special.
Bake
Bake uncovered at 375°F (190°C) for approximately 15–20 minutes, depending on the thickness of the chicken.
The chicken is ready when its thickest portion reaches 165°F (74°C).
