Nina answered calmly.

“Ask your employee.”

Henry turned.

Riley forced a smile.

“There was a cabin baggage dispute.”

Jordan said:

“No.”

Riley looked at him.

Jordan continued.

“There was no baggage dispute.”

Henry’s face hardened.

“What happened?”

Jordan pointed toward the briefcase.

“She put her heel on the case.”

Riley cut in.

“To move it out of the aisle.”

“It was never in the aisle.”

Jordan’s voice remained controlled.

“I saw where it was.”

Riley stared at him.

Henry looked toward Nina.

“Was the security seal intact when you boarded?”

“Yes.”

“And now?”

Nina tilted the case.

The torn strip hung from one clasp.

Claire Donovan closed her eyes.

“Damn.”

Several passengers whispered.

Henry looked toward Claire.

“What does that mean?”

Claire answered.

“It means the original closing package is compromised.”

Riley frowned.

“Closing package?”

Claire stared at her.

“Yes.”

“For what?”

Henry did not answer.

He seemed to realize how much of the transaction had remained hidden even from senior cabin leadership.

Nina opened the outer sleeve of the case.

Not the sealed interior.

She removed a duplicate cover sheet.

Placed it on top of the case.

The lettering was visible to Riley.

CARTER MERIDIAN HOLDINGS

MERIDIAN ATLANTIC AIRWAYS

MAJORITY EQUITY ACQUISITION

FINAL EXECUTIVE AUTHORIZATION

Riley stared.

Then at Nina.

Then at Henry.

Her lips parted.

“No.”

Nobody answered.

Nina continued.

“Value?”

Claire said quietly:

“Two point four billion.”

A passenger whispered:

“Oh my God.”

Riley’s face drained.

“You’re…”

Henry finally spoke.

“She is Nina Carter.”

Riley looked confused.

The name meant nothing for half a second.

Then recognition arrived.

Business magazines.

Financial television.

Carter Meridian.

Infrastructure.

Technology.

Transportation.

One of the most valuable privately controlled conglomerates in the country.

Riley stared at Nina.

“You’re the CEO?”

Nina said nothing.

Henry answered for her.

“She is the controlling shareholder and chief executive of the company scheduled to acquire fifty-four percent of Meridian Atlantic.”

The cabin became perfectly silent.

Even people who did not understand corporate finance understood the next sentence.

Henry looked at Riley.

“She was about to become our controlling owner.”

Riley stepped backward.

Her hand touched the seat.

“No one told me.”

Nina’s eyes sharpened.

Henry looked toward her.

Nina asked:

“Would it have changed how you treated me?”

Riley opened her mouth.

Stopped.
