Several seconds later, he lowers himself onto the bed.

Not onto his belly with four rigid legs.

He curls.

That distinction is enormous.

A Normal Lie-Down Could Become His Biggest Milestone

For Harvey, success may eventually look almost boring.

Water starts.

He notices.

He stays where he is.

Perhaps he changes position.

Perhaps he watches.

Then his head goes back down.

No rigid legs.

No body flattened against the concrete.

No long period of immobility after the sound stops.

Just a dog hearing routine cleaning in another part of the shelter.

The Flood Does Not Need to Be Forgotten for Harvey to Feel Safe

No one knows what Harvey remembers.

And recovery does not require anyone to find out.

What matters is what his body learns now.

Running water can happen without rising around him.

A hose can turn on and then turn off.

The kennel floor remains dry beneath him.

He has somewhere to move.

He has choices.

The sound has an ending.

Tonight, Harvey Still Has Trouble Believing That

He is standing beside his bed when someone begins cleaning farther down the kennel row.

The faucet turns.

Water rushes into the hose.

Harvey hears it.

His head snaps toward the hallway.

His ears pull back.

His body lowers.

His belly reaches the floor.

Both front legs stretch forward.

His hind legs stiffen behind him.

Then Harvey stops moving.

The hose continues.

He remains there.

A bowl rattles nearby.

Nothing.

Someone walks past.

Harvey does not rise.

Then the water shuts off.

The sudden silence fills the kennel.

Harvey stays flat.

Five seconds.

Ten.

His head finally lifts.

One leg bends.

Then another.

Slowly, Harvey gathers his feet beneath himself and stands.

Only after the last sound of running water has disappeared does his body seem willing to move again.

And until Harvey learns that the sound of rushing water no longer means he is trapped with nowhere dry to go, every running hose may keep turning an ordinary shelter floor into a place where his frightened body can do nothing but freeze.
