The first time Nathaniel Carter held his new bride in his arms, he heard three horses coming through the snow, and the woman he had just promised to love for the rest of his life whispered, β€œIf they find what I'm carrying, they may take this ranch away from you.”

It was Christmas Eve, 1887, high in the mountains of northern Arizona Territory, where the winter winds swept through the pine forests and snow gathered against the walls of isolated log cabins.

Inside the Carter ranch house, the world was warm.

A magnificent stone fireplace roared along the western wall. Antique oil lanterns cast golden light across the rough-hewn timber beams, hanging leather saddles, coiled ropes, and carefully polished wooden furniture. A large bed stood near the hearth, its quilt stitched from squares of burgundy, navy, cream, and faded gold.

Nathaniel sat on the edge of that bed wearing his brown cowboy hat, weathered leather vest, and rolled-sleeve frontier shirt.

At forty-five, he was an unusually handsome man, with broad shoulders, powerful arms, a thick dark-brown beard, and shoulder-length wavy hair that fell around a face hardened by years of sun, wind, and difficult work.

His left hand rested gently around his bride's waist.

His right arm supported her as she leaned closer.

Standing before him was Clara Whitmore Carter.

Thirty years old.

A woman whose beauty had never fit into the narrow expectations of the society around her.

Clara had an extraordinarily massive, naturally full figure, weighing approximately 385 kilograms, with a broad, beautifully rounded face, soft rosy cheeks, captivating brown eyes, and long chestnut-brown hair flowing over her shoulders.

Her wedding gown was magnificent.

White floral embroidery covered the enormous layers of flowing fabric. Delicate lace sleeves framed her arms, while a carefully structured corseted bodice supported the dress's soft sweetheart neckline. A high opening in the front of the skirt revealed one of her elegant white embroidered cowboy boots.

A black cowboy hat rested above her loose curls.

She looked unlike any bride Nathaniel had ever imagined marrying.

And more beautiful than any woman he had ever expected to love.

Clara gently cupped his bearded face.

Their foreheads almost touched.

For a moment, Nathaniel forgot the winter storm outside.

Forgot the injured hand that had nearly cost him his livelihood.
