A spacious room on the main floor had been cleared and fitted with sturdy furniture suited to her needs. The entrance threshold had been adjusted, and an additional handrail had been installed near the porch.

Nathaniel had also commissioned a reinforced chair and sturdy bed frame from a carpenter in town.

Clara examined everything carefully.

She noticed the workmanship.

The extra supports.

The practical attention to details most strangers would never have considered.

Her eyes softened.

“Did you do all this?”

Nathaniel shifted awkwardly.

“Some. The carpenter helped.”

Clara looked toward him.

“You didn't know whether I'd stay.”

He nodded.

“No.”

“Then why?”

Nathaniel frowned, genuinely confused.

“You needed somewhere comfortable to sleep.”

For a moment, Clara simply stared.

Then she turned away before he could see the tears gathering in her eyes.

She had spent years being told that her body was an inconvenience.

That accommodating her was expensive.

That she should be grateful for whatever conditions other people offered.

Now a man who barely knew her had changed his home because he believed a guest deserved to be comfortable.

He hadn't presented it as a sacrifice.

Hadn't asked for admiration.

He'd simply done the work.

Clara looked toward the sturdy bed.

Then back at him.

“Thank you.”

Nathaniel nodded.

“You're welcome.”

She smiled.

“And now I'll tell you what's wrong with your porch.”

He stared.

Mateo laughed from the doorway.

“She's been here ten minutes.”

Nathaniel shook his head.

Clara crossed her arms.

“The third support is deteriorating. You can't fix that by adding another step.”

Mateo looked toward Nathaniel.

The rancher sighed.

“Welcome to Carter Ranch.”

Clara laughed.

For the first time in years, Nathaniel's house filled with a woman's laughter.

And the sound affected him more than he expected.

That evening, Mateo's wife, Elena, joined them for dinner.

She was forty-six, warm-faced and energetic, with dark hair pinned into a neat bun and a remarkable ability to prepare excellent food from whatever the ranch happened to have available.

She lived with Mateo in a small cottage near the southern orchard.

Elena had helped Nathaniel during difficult periods, bringing bread, preserving vegetables, and making certain the stubborn rancher ate proper meals when work became overwhelming.

She greeted Clara affectionately.

“I've heard so much about you.”

Clara smiled.

“I hope none of it came from Mateo.”

Elena laughed.

“Unfortunately, most of it did.”

Mateo pretended to be offended.
