The first thing Adrian Brooks saw when he stepped into his dining room was a plate of food flying through the air.
The second thing he saw was his fifteen-year-old son flinching before it hit him.
A white ceramic plate struck the edge of Malik's chair. Yellow sauce, pasta, and pieces of roasted chicken scattered across his light-gray hoodie, his lap, and the polished hardwood floor. A few drops splashed against the enormous mahogany dining table, where four other place settings had been arranged with the same care as an expensive restaurant.
For one terrible second, nobody moved.

Malik sat frozen, his shoulders raised, his hands clenched beside his thighs. He had short, neatly faded black hair, deep-brown skin, and the tall, athletic build of a boy who had recently begun looking more like the man he was becoming than the child he had been.
He didn't look surprised.
That was what Adrian would remember afterward.
His son had been frightened, humiliated, and covered in food, but he hadn't looked surprised.
He'd ducked before the plate struck him, as though he'd learned to anticipate the movement.
At the opposite end of the table stood Vanessa Brooks.
Adrian's wife.
Thirty-nine years old, beautiful, elegant, and dressed in a fitted royal-blue long-sleeved dress that she'd purchased for a charity dinner the previous spring. Her black hair was styled into a smooth shoulder-length bob, and the gold bracelet on her wrist flashed beneath the chandelier as she pointed toward Malik.
โYou don't deserve dinner after the way you've behaved!โ
Her voice was sharp enough to fill the enormous room.
โSit there and watch everyone else eat!โ
Malik lowered his eyes.
He didn't argue.
Didn't reach for a napkin.
Didn't even try to remove the pasta sliding down the front of his hoodie.
Across the table, ten-year-old Zuri sat with both hands pressed against her knees. She was Vanessa's daughter from her previous marriage, a small girl with braided black hair and frightened brown eyes. Her plate was nearly full, but she wasn't eating.
Beside her sat Camille, Vanessa's younger sister, wearing a pale-pink blouse and black trousers.
Camille looked horrified.
She had one hand over her mouth.
Then Adrian stepped forward.
โWhat the hell did you just do to my son?โ
His voice was so loud that everyone turned.
Vanessa froze.
For a moment, the expression on her face was something Adrian had never seen before.
Not guilt.
Not embarrassment.
Calculation.
