Evelyn closed her eyes.

Camille whispered.

โ€œI should have said something sooner.โ€

The older woman reached across the table.

โ€œI'm glad you're telling me now.โ€

Camille looked toward her.

โ€œWhat do we do?โ€

Evelyn took a breath.

โ€œWe focus on keeping both children safe. We tell the people responsible for protecting them what we've actually witnessed.โ€

Camille nodded.

She agreed to provide her own account.

Then she revealed something else.

โ€œThere may be video.โ€

Evelyn stared.

โ€œWhat video?โ€

Camille explained that the house had several visible security cameras.

Adrian installed them years earlier after a burglary in the neighborhood.

One covered the entrance hall.

Another overlooked the kitchen and the adjoining dining area from the patio doors.

The cameras recorded video without audio.

Vanessa often complained about them.

She said they made the house feel like a workplace.

Eventually, she told Adrian the camera system was unreliable and needed replacement.

But Camille noticed that the small recording indicator beside the patio door sometimes remained active.

She assumed the system might still be storing footage.

Evelyn knew the cameras.

Adrian had given her emergency access years earlier so she could check the property while the family traveled.

Her login had not been used recently.

She contacted the security provider through the authorized account procedures to determine what recordings remained available.

The account was still active.

And certain video clips had been retained in the system's backup archive because of motion-triggered events.

Evelyn didn't begin searching randomly through private family life.

She reviewed the dates associated with specific concerns and provided the relevant information to the appropriate authorities.

Then she saw something that made her put down the tablet.

A dinner from nearly three weeks earlier.

Vanessa standing beside Malik.

The boy seated with an empty plate.

Zuri eating quietly.

Camille at the far end of the table.

Then Vanessa lifting a serving dish and placing it out of Malik's reach.

The footage didn't contain sound.

But the movements were unmistakable.

Malik reached toward the food.

Vanessa pulled it away.

He lowered his hand.

Later, when everyone stood to leave, Malik remained seated.

Vanessa collected the dishes.

Then turned off the dining-room lights.

The boy sat alone in the pale light from the hallway.

For several seconds, Evelyn stared at the screen.

Her grandson didn't move.

Eventually, he stood.

Carried his empty plate to the kitchen.

Rinsed it.

And disappeared upstairs.

Evelyn began crying.

Then she watched another clip.

And another.

The recordings didn't document every meal.
