Ceramic hit stone with a loud crack.

Her son jumped.

The Black father’s face became still.

His wife turned.

“He ate.”

The father walked around the table.

He lifted a clean plate from the stack near the serving dishes.

Chicken.

Potatoes.

Green beans.

A roll.

He served them.

His wife watched.

“You’re undermining me.”

He placed the plate in front of his son.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“I’m feeding my child.”

The boy sat.

But did not eat.

The father pulled out the chair beside him.

“Go ahead.”

The boy stared at the food.

His wife crossed her arms.

The father waited.

Finally the boy picked up the fork.

His hand shook.

That frightened the father more than anything yet.

He put one hand on his son’s back.

“Slowly.”

The boy took a bite.

Then another.

Too fast.

The father gently caught his wrist.

“Hey.”

The boy froze.

“You’re okay.”

His eyes filled.

The father lowered his voice.

“Small bites.”

The boy nodded.

His stepmother made a disgusted sound.

The father turned.

“What?”

“This.”

She waved toward them.

“This performance.”

Her son whispered:

“Mom.”

She looked at him.

“Eat.”

The ten-year-old lowered his head.

The father saw that too.

Fear.

Not the same kind as his own son.

But fear.

The father’s anger changed again.

This was bigger than one plate.

His phone buzzed in his pocket.

He ignored it.

His wife said:

“You come home at seven every night.”

“You have no idea what happens here all day.”

“That may be true.”

She blinked.

She had expected resistance.

He continued:

“And I’m going to fix that.”

The boy beside him stopped eating.

The father looked at him.

“Buddy.”

His son whispered:

“Can I talk to you?”

“Of course.”

“Alone?”

The wife laughed.

“There.”

She pointed.

“See?”

The father ignored her.

He stood.

“Come with me.”

The boy followed.

His stepmother said:

“No.”

The father stopped in the doorway.

Turned.

“No?”

“He’s trying to split us.”

The father stared at her.

“He asked to talk to his father.”

“He knows exactly what he’s doing.”

The father spoke quietly.

“You are not stopping him.”

Something in his tone ended the argument.
