then treated that predictable movement as suspicious. He announced a firearm he had not seen. He continued using force after I was on the floor and my hands were controlled. In his initial report, several important details were missing or inaccurately described. Each finding would require careful review under the applicable policies and law, but the basic sequence was no longer a matter of competing memories.

The video was eventually released after the city addressed privacy and investigative requirements. I watched it once with my attorney before it became public. I did not watch it again. Within hours, clips circulated everywhere. Some people focused on my uniform. Others focused on the chief's face when he read the appointment letter. A few insisted I must have provoked the officer in a moment the video somehow concealed. Strangers analyzed the angle of my elbow and the direction of my eyes as though my survival depended on performing obedience in a way that satisfied them retrospectively. My sister told me to stop reading comments. For once, I listened to her.

A reporter requested an interview. I initially declined, then agreed to speak in a controlled setting because the central issue had become distorted. People were calling the event the arrest of a powerful government official, as though the only injustice was that the officer had mistakenly targeted someone important. That story offended me more than I expected. I had spent years advocating for people without influence, including veterans who had nowhere to sleep, workers who could not afford attorneys, and young men who felt that their words were routinely discounted. I wasn't going to let my appointment become the reason people believed I deserved decent treatment.

The interviewer asked, “Would this have happened if the officer knew your position?”

“I don't know,” I said. “But that isn't the question I want our city to answer.”

“What question would you ask?”

“Would he have treated an ordinary man the same way? And if so, what would have happened if there hadn't been clear video and witnesses willing to speak?”

She paused. “Do you think your uniform helped?”

“I wore it because I had attended a veterans' event. It did not grant me authority in that lobby, and it shouldn't have been necessary to secure ordinary courtesy.”

“People are calling you a hero.”

“I came to a meeting and tried to show identification. That's all.”
