A man's shoulder appeared near the edge of the frame.
I leaned forward.
The recording became clearer for a moment.
And I saw his face.
Graham.
He was standing inside my house.
On the night Claire died.
I felt cold.
Mara remained beside me.
The recording continued.
Graham stepped toward Claire.
“This is a business issue. We can handle it without destroying the foundation.”
Claire stared at him.
“You used a charity as your private bank.”
His expression hardened.
“Watch what you accuse people of.”
She held up a folder.
“I have the records.”
Vanessa moved closer.
“Claire, put that away.”
“No.”
The camera shook again.
Ethan's breathing could be heard faintly.
Claire looked toward the hallway.
For a fraction of a second, she saw him.
Her expression changed.
“Ethan?”
The boy froze.
My wife's voice softened.
“Sweetheart, go to your room.”
I began crying.
Because even in the middle of that confrontation, Claire's first instinct had been to protect our son.
The video shifted.
Vanessa stepped toward her.
“Give me the folder.”
Claire pulled it back.
“Don't touch me.”
Then everything happened quickly.
A hand moved.
Claire stumbled backward.
The camera tilted sharply.
And the image dropped toward the hallway floor.
There was a terrible crash.
The recording continued for several seconds.
Voices.
Footsteps.
Then Ethan crying out.
“Mom?”
I gripped the edge of the table.
The video ended.
For a long time, I couldn't move.
I stared at the screen.
Then whispered.
“She pushed her.”
Mara looked toward me.
“The footage shows physical contact immediately before the fall. The investigators are assessing the precise sequence together with the other evidence.”
I closed my eyes.
For a moment, I wanted to scream.
To break something.
To demand that Vanessa be brought into the room so I could ask her how she could do that to Claire.
But I stayed seated.
Because the most important thing was not what I wanted to do in anger.
It was what the evidence could establish.
I opened my eyes.
Then asked the question I'd been carrying since the living-room confrontation.
“Why didn't Ethan tell me?”
Mara's expression softened.
“He has described being frightened and pressured afterward.”
I nodded.
My throat tightened.
“Did he see Claire fall?”
She answered carefully.
“He was present during part of the confrontation. The trained interviewers are helping establish what he recalls without putting unnecessary pressure on him.”
