Architectural sketches.

And little notes she'd leave beside my coffee.

The paper trembled in my hand.

At the top was a date.

November 14.

Three days before Claire died.

Beneath it, she'd written:

James, if you are reading this, something has gone terribly wrong, and I need you to understand that I was trying to protect our family.

I felt cold.

I looked toward Vanessa.

Her face had gone pale.

“Nia,” she said sharply, “where did you get that?”

My daughter stepped behind me.

Then Ethan spoke.

“STOP!”

We all turned.

He was standing beside the broken television.

His breathing was uneven.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Ethan, don't make this worse.”

My son shook his head.

For a moment, he seemed unable to speak.

Then he looked directly at me.

“Dad.”

His voice broke.

“I need to tell you something.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What?”

Vanessa moved toward him.

“Ethan, remember what we discussed.”

He stepped backward.

“No.”

She stopped.

For the first time, I saw real panic in her expression.

Ethan's eyes filled.

Then he said the sentence that destroyed everything I believed about my marriage.

“She made me delete Mom's final recording that night.”

The room went completely silent.

For several seconds, I couldn't breathe.

I looked toward my son.

“What recording?”

He swallowed.

His eyes filled with tears.

Then he pointed toward Vanessa.

“She knows.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“James, he's confused. This is exactly what I've been trying to explain—”

“Stop talking.”

My voice was lower than I intended.

She stared at me.

I turned toward Ethan.

“Son, what recording?”

He looked toward the staircase beyond the living room.

For a moment, his face seemed to collapse.

Then he whispered.

“The night Mom died.”

I stood perfectly still.

He continued.

“I heard them fighting.”

Nia covered her mouth.

Vanessa took another step toward him.

“Ethan.”

I raised one hand.

“Stay where you are.”

She froze.

My son looked directly into my eyes.

“I started recording because I thought Mom was in trouble.”

For a moment, his voice failed.

Then he whispered.

“Vanessa saw me afterward. She took my phone and made me delete it.”

I looked toward my wife.

She was staring at the floor.

For two years, she'd told me Claire's death was an accident.
