Henry is 11 years old, a senior Golden Retriever who entered the shelter after his owner died.

He is also living with severe arthritis, making even ordinary walking difficult. But when staff take Henry into the shelter’s meet-and-greet room, he repeatedly does something that has become difficult to overlook.

He checks the empty chairs.

One by one.

Henry is being presented as a dog at risk of euthanasia, although an exact deadline, shelter name, and location were not provided with his information. His current situation should therefore be considered urgent without inventing a specific countdown.

What is known is why Henry is here.

The person he lived with is gone.

And Henry is still behaving differently around the places where people sit.

Henry Used to Lie at His Owner’s Feet

Before entering the shelter, Henry had an owner.

That person died, leaving the 11-year-old Golden Retriever without the home and routine he had known.

One detail from Henry's previous life helps explain why staff have been paying attention to his behavior around chairs: Henry reportedly used to spend time lying beneath or beside his owner's feet.

Now there are no familiar feet waiting for him.

When Henry is taken from his kennel into the meet-and-greet room, he does not simply choose a comfortable spot and settle down.

He begins checking the chairs.

Despite his arthritis, Henry slowly walks toward the first one.

He sniffs around the seat and then lowers his nose toward the floor beneath it.

Then he moves to another.

He checks there too.

The process can continue from chair to chair, with Henry investigating both the chair itself and the space where someone's feet would normally be.

Eventually, he stops searching.

Henry lowers his aging body beside one of the empty chairs and rests his graying head against its leg.

No One Can Know Exactly What Henry Is Looking For

It is tempting to give Henry's behavior a human explanation.

Perhaps he believes his owner will be sitting in one of those chairs.

Perhaps he is looking for a familiar scent.
