“Olivia.”

Olivia looked at her mother.

“No.”

One word.

But Samantha heard history in it.

Charlotte joined her sister.

“So do I.”

Arthur nodded politely.

“Of course.”

Victoria watched her carefully constructed evening collapse in less than a minute.

The Langfords left.

The door closed.

Victoria stood with her back to everyone.

Nobody moved.

Then she said:

“You’re all enjoying this.”

Samantha frowned.

Victoria turned.

“You think I don’t see it?”

She looked from daughter to daughter.

“You’ve been waiting for me to fail.”

Charlotte whispered:

“No.”

“I built this family.”

Malcolm said nothing.

“I kept the company intact after Richard died.”

“I managed this house.”

“I protected all of you.”

Olivia stared at her.

“From what?”

Victoria looked at her.

Olivia continued.

“From jobs?”

“From consequences?”

“From Samantha?”

“You raised us to think she was less than us.”

“I never said that.”

“You didn’t have to.”

Charlotte wiped tears.

“You made her serve us.”

“She helped.”

“She served.”

“She lived here.”

“So did we!”

Olivia shouted.

“Did you ever ask me to wash your sheets?”

Victoria’s face twisted.

“You had different strengths.”

Samantha laughed bitterly.

“My strength was dish soap?”

“Samantha, stop reducing everything to cruelty.”

“Then explain it.”

Victoria’s voice cracked.

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

For once, Victoria looked afraid to speak.

Then she did.

“When I got pregnant with you, your father was leaving me.”

Samantha stopped.

Victoria’s eyes filled.

Not performatively.

Truly.

“He had an apartment.”

“He said we had become toxic.”

“He wanted separation.”

“I found out I was pregnant the same week.”

Samantha listened.

Victoria continued.

“He stayed.”

“For you.”

“Or because of you.”

“I never knew.”

“Every time I looked at you, I remembered that he stayed because he felt obligated.”

Charlotte whispered:

“Mom…”

Victoria ignored her.

“Then he became closer to you than anyone.”

“He took you everywhere.”

“He defended you.”

“Every disagreement became about Samantha.”

“I became the villain in my own marriage.”

Samantha felt anger and grief collide.

“So you punished a child.”

Victoria flinched.

“I didn’t think of it that way.”

“What way did you think of it?”

“I thought you had him.”

“And your sisters had me.”

Samantha stared.
