Something passed between them.

Preparedness.

Victoria saw it.

“What is this?”

Malcolm put his case on the marble console.

“Richard instructed me to deliver documents to Samantha on her twentieth birthday.”

Silence.

Olivia looked toward Charlotte.

Charlotte whispered, “What documents?”

Victoria’s voice sharpened.

“That was handled years ago.”

“No.”

Malcolm opened the case.

“You handled the estate administration.”

“I handled everything Richard left me to handle.”

“Almost.”

Victoria crossed her arms.

“What exactly are you implying?”

“Nothing.”

Malcolm removed a thick sealed envelope.

“I’m stating that one portion of Richard’s estate was intentionally withheld from your control.”

Victoria went pale.

Samantha stared.

“My father left me something?”

Malcolm turned toward her.

“Yes.”

Victoria stepped between them.

“She was fourteen.”

“At the time.”

“I was her legal guardian.”

“Which is why Richard used an independent trust.”

Olivia stood beside the sofa.

“What trust?”

Malcolm looked at the three daughters.

“The Collins Family Stewardship Trust.”

Victoria snapped, “That trust is mine.”

“No.”

The word was calm.

That made it worse.

Malcolm continued.

“You have received income through it.”

“You have exercised temporary management authority over certain assets.”

“But you have never owned its controlling interest.”

Victoria’s voice lowered.

“Malcolm.”

A warning.

He ignored it.

Richard had anticipated intimidation.

Samantha could feel that somehow.

Malcolm looked at her.

“Your father appointed you successor controlling beneficiary effective on your twentieth birthday.”

Samantha stared.

The sentence barely made sense.

“Controlling what?”

“The trust owns fifty-one percent of Collins Pacific Holdings.”

Olivia’s mouth fell open.

Charlotte went completely still.

Samantha knew Collins Pacific.

Everybody in the family did.

It was Richard’s private holding company.

Commercial real estate.

Hotels.

Investment properties.

Two agricultural businesses.

Private equity stakes.

The mansion itself.

Samantha looked at Victoria.

Her mother no longer looked angry.

She looked cornered.

Malcolm continued.

“The trust also owns this residence.”

Victoria suddenly lunged for the envelope.

Evelyn moved first.

At sixty-seven she was not faster in any normal sense.

But she had apparently spent years waiting for this exact movement.

She stepped between Victoria and the documents.

“Don’t.”

Victoria stared at her.

“You knew.”

Evelyn said nothing.

“You knew!”

“Yes.”

The admission hit harder than anything else.

Victoria’s voice shook.

“For how long?”

“Since Richard died.”

“You worked in my house while hiding this?”

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“Your house?”

Samantha felt the sentence in her chest.
