“She is my daughter-in-law.”
“Step back.”
“She is overreacting. Her water broke during the ceremony and she became hysterical.”
The wedding planner stood.
“Hysterical?”
My mother-in-law’s eyes flashed.
“Be quiet.”
The planner held up her phone.
“You told them not to call an ambulance.”
My mother-in-law froze.
The planner continued.
“I recorded everything.”
The corridor filled with silence.
My husband appeared behind his mother.
He looked at me on the stretcher.
Then at the broken door.
Then at the planner.
“What recording?”
I looked at him.
His face collapsed when he saw mine.
He moved toward me.
“Baby?”
I turned away.
The paramedic attached a monitor.
Another placed an oxygen mask near my face.
“We need to move.”
The husband followed.
“What’s wrong?”
The paramedic answered carefully.
“We’re concerned about fetal distress. We need obstetric evaluation immediately.”
My husband went white.
Then my mother-in-law said something I will never forget.
“Can she leave through the service entrance?”
Everyone stared.
She gestured toward the ballroom.
“The guests don’t need to see this.”
My sister-in-law appeared behind her in full wedding dress.
Her veil trailed across the floor.
She had heard.
She pulled the veil from her head.
Dropped it.
Then looked at her mother.
“Get out.”
My mother-in-law blinked.
“This is my daughter’s wedding.”
The bride stepped closer.
“No.”
She pointed toward the ballroom.
“That was my wedding.”
Then toward me.
“This is my family.”
Her mother’s mouth opened.
The bride said, “Get out.”
My husband whispered, “Mom.”
My mother-in-law turned toward him.
He looked shattered.
“Did you lock her in there?”
“She was disrupting—”
“Did you?”
His voice broke.
His mother’s expression hardened.
“I was protecting your sister’s day.”
My husband stared.
The bride laughed once.
It sounded almost like a sob.
“From a medical emergency?”
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
The paramedics started moving me.
My husband grabbed the side rail.
“I’m coming.”
I looked at him.
For a moment, I saw the man I married.
Terrified.
Loving.
Weak.
All at once.
Then I remembered the recording.
Just handle it.
Today needs to be about my sister.
I said, “Not yet.”
His hand stopped.
“What?”
“I need you to stay away from me until I know my baby is okay.”
His eyes filled.
“I didn’t know she would do this.”
“That’s always your answer.”
“I swear.”
“Not now.”
