She hesitated.
Then complied.
It was placed where the responding personnel could document and handle it appropriately.
Michael watched.
For the first time, he felt the immediate anger beginning to give way to something else.
Confusion.
Evelyn's actions were outrageous.
But they were also strangely deliberate.
She'd arrived with an extinguisher already in hand.
She'd contacted authorities before the grill was lit.
And she'd seemed almost eager for the police to arrive.
It was as though she'd expected the entire situation to unfold according to a script.
Except one part hadn't gone the way she'd anticipated.
The officer hadn't automatically sided with her.
And now she was frightened.
Michael looked toward the patio table.
His daughter's colorful sign was still standing.
BURGERS FOR BOOKS!
A thin layer of white powder covered one corner.
Beside it sat the donation jar.
Several neighbors had gathered around Natalie and Sophie.
The little girl was crying quietly.
Michael felt a fresh surge of anger.
Whatever happened next, he needed to make sure Sophie understood that the cookout hadn't failed because their family did something wrong.
But before he could approach her, Officer Harris returned.
โMr. Lawson?โ
Michael turned.
โYes?โ
โDo you have a place where we can review the relevant footage without everyone gathering around?โ
Michael nodded.
โThe kitchen.โ
Harris looked toward the other witnesses.
Then back at him.
โLet's start with the recording your neighbor made.โ
Michael glanced toward Evelyn.
She was standing near the side gate.
Her expression had become rigid.
And for the first time, she was looking not at the ruined food but at the phones in the neighbors' hands.
Something about those recordings terrified her.
Michael was beginning to understand that the extinguisher wasn't the only thing she wanted to control.
The video lasted twenty-three seconds.
Michael watched it three times before he could speak.
Ryan had been recording his seven-year-old daughter playing near the patio when Evelyn entered the backyard.
The first few seconds showed children laughing.
A ball rolling through the grass.
And the edge of Michael's grill in the background.
Then a woman's voice interrupted.
โThis party is over!โ
The camera turned.
Evelyn appeared in her floral blouse, already raising the extinguisher.
Michael shouted.
The white cloud erupted.
Several guests moved away.
And Evelyn continued spraying until the cooking area was completely covered.
There was no visible uncontrolled fire before the discharge.
No flames spreading across the grass.
No smoke billowing from the house.
Only an ordinary barbecue grill with food on its grates.
Officer Harris watched without speaking.
Then he asked Ryan whether the original recording was still on his phone.
Ryan nodded.
The officer explained how the file could be preserved and provided to the investigation.
