I provided the previous incident reference.

Then I ended the call.

The president watched me.

For several seconds, she seemed uncertain.

Then her smile returned.

"You'll regret this."

I looked toward her.

"Maybe."

Then I pointed toward the gate.

"But you're still not supposed to be here."

When the police arrived, the woman immediately began performing.

The transformation was astonishing.

Her voice changed.

Her posture softened.

And the anger she'd displayed moments earlier became exaggerated fear.

She pointed toward me.

"He's been threatening me! I came over because the grill was endangering the neighborhood, and he came at me with those metal things!"

The male officer looked toward the tongs on the patio.

His partner examined the backyard.

Then the first officer asked me to remain where I was while they established what happened.

I agreed.

The president continued speaking.

She claimed I was refusing lawful HOA orders.

Said I'd been harassing community leadership.

And insisted the officers needed to remove me from the property.

That last demand made the female officer look up.

"Remove him from where?"

The president pointed toward the house.

"From this neighborhood."

The officer frowned.

"Ma'am, does he live here?"

The president hesitated.

Then said, "Yes, but—"

Before she could continue, the male officer's shoulder radio crackled.

Dispatch provided the supplemental trespass information.

The officer stopped.

His partner looked toward him.

Then both officers turned toward the HOA president.

The male officer asked whether she'd received a documented warning not to enter this address.

Her expression changed.

For several seconds, she didn't answer.

Then she looked toward me.

Her eyes narrowed.

And she whispered something that made my skin crawl.

"You set this up."

I stared.

I hadn't invited her.

Hadn't touched her.

And hadn't asked her to call the police.

I had simply been grilling burgers in my own backyard.

But in her mind, the fact that her plan wasn't working meant someone must have cheated.

The female officer took a step closer to the president.

"Ma'am, we're going to hear your account carefully, but I need you to stop interrupting."

The president straightened.

"I am the elected HOA president."

The officer nodded.

"I understand."

Then she gestured toward the open gate.

"Why did you enter this man's private backyard after being told not to?"

The woman blinked.

For a moment, she looked as though she'd never considered that the question might be asked.

Then she answered.

"Because he's violating community safety standards."

The officer remained calm.
