"That's not what the email said."

The man pulled out his phone.

"It says 'private pool reserved exclusively for HOA guests.'"

Marcus watched Patricia's face.

That sentence mattered.

She knew it.

Daniel knew it.

And now the neighbors knew it.

More guests arrived.

Then more.

Within fifteen minutes, almost thirty people stood on the street carrying towels and bags.

Nobody knew what to do.

Patricia kept promising the event would proceed.

Marcus kept the gate locked.

At 8:34, someone asked for a refund.

Patricia told them to contact the HOA office.

At 8:41, another demanded cash.

At 8:47, a woman asked whether the homeowner had really consented.

Patricia snapped.

"Of course he did."

Marcus looked at her.

She realized her mistake.

Daniel quietly began taking notes.

At 9:02, the HOA treasurer arrived.

Her name was Evelyn Carter.

She stepped from a small sedan and immediately looked confused.

"Patricia?"

"What?"

"What's happening?"

"Marcus is refusing access."

Evelyn looked at the gate.

Then at the drained pool.

Then at the crowd.

"Did Marcus approve this?"

Patricia didn't answer.

Evelyn looked at her.

"Patricia."

"No."

Evelyn's eyes widened.

"You booked his property without permission?"

"I had reason to believeโ€”"

"Did he say yes?"

"No."

The silence that followed was brutal.

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

Then Marcus.

Then Patricia.

"How much money did we collect?"

Patricia swallowed.

"That's not relevant."

Evelyn's voice became quiet.

"How much?"

"About four thousand eight hundred dollars."

Several people nearby heard her.

One man immediately said, "Four thousand eight hundred?"

Another woman shook her head.

"You charged my family seventy-five dollars."

"Seventy-five?"

"Two adults and one child."

Patricia looked overwhelmed.

Marcus watched the situation unfold.

He could have celebrated.

He could have mocked her.

He could have said, "I told you."

Instead, he walked toward the gate.

Patricia stepped closer.

Marcus stopped several feet away.

"You need to refund them."

"I will."

"Today."

"I said I will."

"Not eventually."

"Today."

"And send a written correction."

She glared.

"Fine."

"State clearly that the property was never authorized for the event."

Patricia looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

She looked back at Marcus.

"You want me to humiliate myself."

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

"Then what?"

"I want you to tell the truth."

That sentence landed harder than an insult.

By ten o'clock, the party was over before it began.

The tables were folded.
