Then she looked toward the green tank.
“And for what it's worth, I don't think it's ugly.”
I laughed.
She smiled.
“I think it's the most beautiful thing on this side of the neighborhood.”
A week later, the association announced a special membership meeting.
The agenda included a vote on the president's removal under the governing procedures, an independent financial review, and a proposed plan for correcting the private water-system deficiencies.
The meeting was held inside the clubhouse.
Every chair was occupied.
Residents stood along the walls.
Others waited outside.
I'd attended plenty of association meetings before, but I'd never seen the room so full.
The president arrived wearing an expensive hot-pink blazer.
Her blonde hair was perfectly styled.
Gold jewelry sparkled beneath the ceiling lights.
She carried a thick leather folder and walked toward the front table as though nothing had happened.
But the room had changed.
People weren't whispering about lawn heights.
Or mailbox colors.
Or whether someone had left a trash container outside too long.
They were discussing engineering reports.
Reserve funds.
Contractor payments.
And the obligation to maintain essential infrastructure.
The board's attorney opened the meeting.
He explained the voting procedures and the findings that could properly be discussed.
Then the independent accountant presented her preliminary conclusions.
She described the reserve transfers.
The inaccurate expense classifications.
The insufficient documentation.
And the need for further examination of certain contractor payments.
She did not exaggerate.
She did not claim every questionable invoice was proof of theft.
But the evidence was clear enough to establish serious failures of oversight.
The retired treasurer then stood.
His hands were shaking.
For several seconds, he stared toward the audience.
Then he spoke.
“I owe everyone here an apology.”
The room became quiet.
He continued.
“I knew we had concerns about the private water system.”
His voice trembled.
“I asked questions. But when the president assured me the matters were being addressed, I accepted those answers without insisting on proper documentation.”
He looked down.
“That was a failure of my responsibility as treasurer.”
Several residents shifted uncomfortably.
He continued.
“I should have pushed harder for independent verification.”
Then he looked toward the president.
“And I should never have allowed important safety questions to become a matter of protecting the association's reputation.”
The president's expression hardened.
She leaned toward the microphone.
“This is outrageous.”
The attorney raised one hand.
She continued.
“These people are deliberately trying to destroy everything I've done for this neighborhood!”
