Megan thanked him.

Mercer responded with the kind of brief acknowledgment common among people who are uncomfortable receiving gratitude for something they do not consider extraordinary.

He had not broken a rule.

He had used one carefully.

That difference mattered to him.

Later, when another employee asked why he had bothered arranging the visit, Mercer answered practically. He had read the request. He had spoken with the rescue. The dog was calm. The supervisor approved it. The room was available.

Everything else people wanted to attach to the story came afterward.

Megan's release date arrived on a cold Thursday morning.

There was no television-style crowd waiting outside the facility. No rescue organization gathered with cameras. Her brother, Scott, parked in the visitor lot in an eight-year-old SUV with a paper cup of coffee in one holder and another one getting cold in the second.

Megan walked out carrying a clear plastic bag with paperwork and the few possessions she had taken inside.

She got into the passenger seat.

Scott hugged her.

Then Megan asked the question he had expected before anything else.

“How far?”

The Averys lived ninety-three miles away.

They stopped once for fuel.

Megan barely touched the coffee.

Susan knew they were coming but had not brought Rufus outside in advance. She did not want him standing in the cold or becoming agitated by every vehicle on the road.

When Scott's SUV entered the driveway, Rufus was asleep in the front room.

Gerald heard the tires first.

The dog raised his head.

By the time Megan reached the porch, Rufus was standing behind the screen door.

This reunion was not filmed.

Megan was grateful for that later.

Susan opened the inner door.

For half a second Rufus did nothing.

Then his tail began moving.

Megan crouched.

Rufus crossed the porch and walked directly into the space between her arms.

Again, he did not jump.

He leaned.

The same way he had in the jail interview room.

The same pressure of chest against body.
