“What did you see me steal?”
“The bracelet.”
A murmur spread.
The associate immediately shook her head.
“No.”
The blonde turned.
“You weren’t watching every second.”
“The bracelet was in the case after she left.”
“Then check again.”
Another associate went to the case.
Opened it.
Stopped.
The bracelet was gone.
The entire room changed.
The blonde woman’s mouth opened in exaggerated shock.
“Oh my God.”
The Black woman looked toward the case.
Then back at the blonde.
Interesting.
The young associate looked confused.
“I checked it.”
The blonde pointed.
“She took it.”
The Black woman’s expression became still.
Not frightened.
Focused.
The blonde continued.
“I knew it.”
The associate said:
“You cannot say that without evidence.”
“I watched her.”
“You said the bracelet was missing after she left the counter, but it was not.”
The blonde’s voice rose.
“Are you calling me a liar?”
The Black woman finally spoke.
“You seem very certain.”
The blonde faced her.
“I am.”
“Then call security.”
The answer surprised everyone.
Including the blonde.
The Black woman placed her handbag on the nearest display table.
“Call them.”
The young associate whispered:
“You don’t have to do that.”
“I know.”
The blonde pulled out her phone.
“I’m calling the police.”
The Black woman looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because you stole something worth more than most people make in a year.”
The associate’s face hardened.
“Ma’am.”
The blonde ignored her.
She dialed.
The Black woman did not stop her.
That was another surprise.
The blonde expected panic.
Argument.
Escape.
Anything that confirmed the story she had built.
Instead the woman waited.
Police arrived twelve minutes later.
Two officers.
The first was a white man in his late thirties.
Professional.
Alert.
The second was a Latina officer in her early thirties.
The blonde woman intercepted them before they reached the Black woman.
“Thank God.”
She pointed.
“That’s her.”
The male officer looked toward the chairwoman.
Then back.
“What happened?”
“She stole a bracelet.”
“Did you witness it?”
“Yes.”
The young associate immediately stepped forward.
“She did not.”
The blonde whipped around.
“You weren’t there.”
The associate said:
“I was at the counter.”
The officer lifted a hand.
“One person at a time.”
He asked the blonde:
“What exactly did you see?”
