And at the bottom—
the diamond-and-emerald prototype bracelet.
Gasps moved through the boutique.
The blonde woman smiled.
A victorious, vicious smile.
“There.”
She looked at the officer.
“I told you.”
The young associate went white.
The manager looked horrified.
The chairwoman stared at the bracelet.
For perhaps two seconds, even she was surprised.
Then her expression changed.
Not guilt.
Recognition.
Something had finally made sense.
She looked toward the blonde.
The blonde smiled broader.
The chairwoman asked quietly:
“How did you know it was there?”
The smile weakened.
“I told you.”
“No.”
The chairwoman took one step closer.
“You told the officer it had to be there before anybody searched.”
The blonde crossed her arms.
“Because it was obvious.”
The chairwoman looked toward the manager.
“Security footage.”
His eyes widened.
“Yes.”
The blonde’s face changed.
The manager turned toward a staff member.
“Bring the tablet.”
The blonde stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.”
The officer stopped her.
“Stay where you are.”
“I’m leaving.”
“No.”
The blonde stared.
“Am I being detained?”
The officer answered:
“For the moment, yes.”
Her face went pale.
A sales associate rushed over with a tablet.
The manager opened the security system.
The chairwoman said:
“Start with the jewelry counter.”
They watched.
Video showed the Black woman examining the bracelet.
Returning it.
Walking away.
The blonde watching.
Then later—
the blonde at the case.
The associate turning to retrieve something.
The blonde’s hand moving.
A tiny flash of emerald.
The bracelet disappearing into her sleeve.
The boutique went silent.
The blonde stared.
“That doesn’t prove—”
The chairwoman said:
“Fitting salon.”
The manager switched camera angles.
The video played.
The Black woman entered the fitting room.
Placed her handbag on the bench.
The associate left.
Then the blonde entered.
Looked around.
Opened her handbag.
Removed the bracelet.
Dropped it into the Black woman’s bag.
Closed it.
Walked away.
Nobody spoke.
The officer looked from the screen to the blonde.
The blonde looked as though she had forgotten how to breathe.
The chairwoman watched her.
No triumph.
Only disappointment.
The blonde whispered:
“That isn’t what it looks like.”
The Latina officer almost laughed.
“What does it look like?”
The blonde looked around desperately.
“I was…”
She stopped.
The male officer said:
