But she could not stop thinking about one detail.
When she mentioned her signature, the chief financial officer had looked directly at the youngest executive.
Not at the general counsel.
Not at the billionaire.
At the youngest executive.
And for one brief moment, the young man's face had shown something far more serious than embarrassment.
It had shown fear.
In the staff room, she closed the door and leaned against a row of metal lockers.
For the first time that night, her hands began to shake.
She looked down at her fingers.
They were trembling so noticeably that she had to clasp them together.
She was not frightened because the billionaire had raised his voice.
She had dealt with rude executives before.
What frightened her was the realization that she had just confronted one of the most influential figures connected to the investigation that had already destroyed her career.
The man controlled companies in several countries.
He had relationships with major banks, law firms, and political figures.
He could afford teams of lawyers whose hourly fees exceeded what she earned in an entire week.
And he had just discovered where she worked.
The waitress sat on a narrow wooden bench.
She took several slow breaths.
Then she reached for her phone.
Before she could unlock it, the restaurant owner entered.
“Are you all right?”
The waitress looked up.
“Yes.”
The owner raised an eyebrow.
“That wasn't a convincing answer.”
The waitress gave a small, exhausted smile.
“I'm trying to be.”
The owner sat beside her.
For a moment, neither woman spoke.
Then the owner said, “He demanded that I fire you.”
The waitress felt her stomach tighten.
“I expected that.”
“He said you were unprofessional.”
The waitress looked toward the floor.
“I'm sorry the restaurant got involved.”
The owner gently shook her head.
“Don't apologize for someone else's behavior.”
“He's an important customer.”
“So are the people who come here for birthdays. So are the couples saving money for a special anniversary. So is the nurse who eats alone after a night shift. Importance isn't determined by the size of a bank account.”
The waitress looked at her.
The owner continued.
“He said he would never return if you remained employed here.”
“What did you say?”
“I thanked him for letting me know.”
