Major's behavior showed that the sound mattered to him.

It could not tell anyone exactly what he was thinking.

His Body Always Revealed the Cost

For the first few seconds, Major could almost resemble the dog he had been before the injury.

Then came the tremor.

Usually it began behind him.

A subtle vibration through one hind leg.

Then the other.

Major tried to maintain the position.

His front half remained upright.

His gaze stayed toward the door.

But the trembling increased.

Eventually, one hip began drifting sideways.

Major corrected himself if he could.

Sometimes he managed several more seconds.

Then gravity won.

He Never Dramatically Collapsed

The movement was slower than that.

That almost made it harder to watch.

Major's rear end began sliding.

His hind feet lost their stable position.

His body lowered gradually toward the floor.

The alert posture disappeared inch by inch.

Finally, he was lying down again.

The dog who had looked ready for a command only moments earlier was once more resting against the kennel floor.

The Footsteps Usually Kept Going

Often, whoever Major heard was not even coming for him.

A staff member might be carrying supplies.

Someone could be walking toward another kennel.

The sound passed Major's door and continued down the hallway.

Major still watched.

For a moment, his ears followed the direction.

Then his posture softened.

Sometimes that was when his legs finally gave out.

The person disappeared.

No command came.

Major was left with the physical effort he had spent preparing for one.

The Behavior Repeated Too Consistently to Ignore

Once could have been coincidence.

Twice could have been curiosity.

But Major kept doing it.

Resting dog.

Footsteps.

Head up.

Push upright.

Sit.

Wait.

Tremble.

Slide down.

Soon staff knew what was likely to happen before Major even started moving.

That created a difficult question.

Should they discourage him from sitting?

Or was the behavior itself something Major still needed?

Recovery Required Protecting His Body From His Own Determination

Major's movement restriction existed for a reason.
