“Gentlemen, is everything all right?”
The millionaire looked toward him.
“You may want to start thinking about another job.”
The German industrialist stood.
“That is enough.”
The manager froze.
The millionaire stared.
The industrialist continued:
“You seem determined to prove every concern I had about this acquisition in a single lunch.”
The millionaire’s face tightened.
“Do not make a nine-hundred-million-dollar decision because a waitress embarrassed you.”
The old man looked at him.
“No.”
“I am reconsidering because you lied about the labor plan.”
The millionaire said nothing.
“And because you did it casually.”
The industrialist pointed toward the dining room.
“In front of people whose lives depend on the plan.”
The millionaire’s jaw tightened.
“This is emotional.”
The old man nodded.
“Yes.”
Then:
“Character often becomes visible when people believe consequences are absent.”
The millionaire stared.
The waitress returned before he could respond.
Everyone turned toward her.
She had removed the locket and placed it safely in her apron pocket.
Her face was composed.
The industrialist stood again.
She lifted one hand.
“Please don’t.”
He stopped.
“I need answers.”
“Yes.”
“But not here.”
“Of course.”
She looked toward the millionaire.
Then the check.
Still on the table.
One hundred thousand dollars.
She picked it up.
The millionaire’s eyebrows rose.
She tore it in half.
Then again.
The dining room inhaled collectively.
She placed the pieces beside his plate.
“I translated your sentence.”
The millionaire stared.
She continued.
“The money was never the point.”
Then she looked toward the German industrialist.
“I finish my shift at four.”
The old man nodded.
“I’ll wait.”
“You don’t need to sit here.”
“I know.”
“I said I’ll finish my shift.”
“Yes.”
“I mean it.”
He understood.
She did not want special treatment.
Not now.
Maybe not ever.
“I’ll wait elsewhere.”
he said.
The millionaire laughed bitterly.
“You cannot be serious.”
The industrialist looked toward him.
“I am.”
“What about the acquisition?”
The old man picked up his coat.
“Paused.”
The millionaire’s face went pale.
“You don’t have authority to pause the entire financing.”
“I have authority over mine.”
That was enough.
Without his commitment, the structure collapsed.
The millionaire stood.
“You are risking a fortune over a misunderstanding.”
