But I saw it.

Fear.

She lunged.

Not at him.

At the envelope.

Her palm struck his hand.

The envelope spun across the polished ballroom floor.

Someone gasped.

My son flinched.

That was when I started moving.

I crossed the room fast enough that chairs scraped as people pulled their feet back.

But the bride was closer.

The envelope stopped near the hem of her wedding gown.

She bent.

His grandmother said:

“Don’t.”

The bride looked up.

The entire room went silent again.

“Why?”

No answer.

The bride picked up the envelope.

It had already been opened.

Not cleanly.

The seal had been slit.

Then pressed back together.

Her name was on the front.

I could see that much from where I stood.

The bride stared.

“This was mailed to me.”

His mother reached.

“Give it here.”

The bride stepped back.

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

The groom looked at her.

“What is it?”

She shook her head slowly.

“I don’t know.”

His mother said too quickly:

“It’s nothing.”

The bride looked at her.

“Then why did you hide it?”

“I didn’t.”

My son pointed toward the wooden box.

“It was with Mom’s letters.”

His grandmother turned on him.

“Stop this.”

That was the wrong thing to say.

The groom’s face hardened.

“Mother.”

She ignored him.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

My son’s lower lip trembled.

“I understand you told Dad I wasn’t his.”

The groom closed his eyes.

For one second.

That was all.

The bride stared at him.

“You told me that was proven.”

He opened his eyes.

“I thought it was.”

His mother said:

“It was.”

The bride looked down at the envelope.

Then pulled out the papers.

His mother moved.

She grabbed the bride’s wrist.

“Do not read that here.”

The groom caught his mother’s arm.

“Let go.”

She stared at him.

He had probably never said those two words to her with that tone.

Not in his entire life.

She released the bride.

The bride unfolded the report.

Her eyes moved across the first page.

Then the second.

The ballroom was so quiet I could hear paper crackle.

She looked at my former husband.

Then at my son.

Then at me.

Her face went completely white.

“What?”

The groom stepped closer.

“What does it say?”

She swallowed.

Then read the line none of us would ever forget.

“Probability of paternity…”

Her voice broke.

She looked up.

“Ninety-nine point nine nine percent.”
