Dinner began.

Weather.

Work.

Mom’s garden.

Aaron.

Vanessa was working at a marketing agency.

She had moved apartments.

She volunteered at an animal shelter as part of court service and kept going after hours completed.

Then silence.

Finally Vanessa looked at me.

“I don’t know how to do this.”

“Neither do I.”

“I rehearsed.”

“I figured.”

“You always know.”

“Your face changes when you rehearse.”

She almost smiled.

Then became serious.

“I am sorry.”

“I know.”

“That isn't forgiveness question.”

“Good.”

She nodded.

“I wanted to tell you something I only recently understood.”

I waited.

“After I pushed you, when you were on ground, I really did think you were exaggerating.”

My stomach tightened.

Vanessa continued quickly.

“Not because you were.”

“Because if you weren't, then I had done something unforgivable.”

“So my brain immediately needed you to be dramatic.”

“That is why I kept saying it.”

“I made your reaction the problem because I couldn't tolerate what my action meant.”

I stared.

That explanation hurt more than I expected.

Maybe because it made sense.

Not excuse.

Sense.

“I remember looking at you.”

I said.

“You were angry at me for being hurt.”

“Yes.”

“I think that was worse than push.”

Her eyes filled.

“I know.”

We sat.

Mom looked between us but stayed quiet.

Vanessa whispered:

“You don't owe me relationship.”

“I know.”

“I would like one someday.”

“I don't know.”

“I know.”

Again.

No demand.

That dinner became another dinner six months later.

Then occasional texts.

No sudden sisterhood.

No “everything healed.”

Sometimes Vanessa said something old and sharp.

I withdrew.

She apologized.

Sometimes I interpreted normal frustration as danger.

I had to check myself too.

Repair was not a straight line.

Daniel heard through mutual friends that Vanessa and I had limited contact.

He emailed me once.

I’m glad if it is good for you.

Nothing more.
