The commander laughed.

“Your father is a dead man pretending otherwise.”

The Prince answered, “Then you should be embarrassed that a dead man already has more soldiers.”

Murmurs came from the wall.

The commander’s face hardened.

He grabbed a young guard beside him and shoved him toward the parapet.

“Anyone who lowers a weapon hangs.”

The Prince watched the soldiers.

Fear.

Again.

Always fear.

He understood the Regent’s kingdom now.

It survived by convincing every frightened person that everyone else was more frightened.

The Prince raised his voice.

“My father is alive.”

Silence.

“The Queen still rules.”

He stepped closer.

“The Regent is in chains.”

Several soldiers looked at each other.

The commander shouted, “Lies!”

The Prince reached into his cloak.

He held up the faded blue cloth from the mask.

Then the black key.

“The western prison is open.”

More whispers.

The Prince continued.

“Anyone inside who serves the kingdom rather than one frightened commander may walk out.”

The commander drew his sword.

“I will kill the first man who moves.”

Nobody moved.

For a moment, the Prince feared he had failed.

Then the young guard the commander had shoved turned around.

He punched him.

The commander stumbled.

Another soldier grabbed his sword arm.

A third opened the gate.

The barracks surrendered from inside.

The Captain looked at the Prince.

“Do not become pleased with yourself.”

“Too late.”

The Captain sighed.

The next morning, the entire capital woke to bells.

Not funeral bells.

Return bells.

The King appeared on the palace balcony beside the Queen.

He was too weak to stand unaided.

So he sat.

The Queen stood at one side.

The Prince at the other.

Below them, tens of thousands filled the square.

The King looked at the crowd.

He had spent years imagining what he would say if freedom ever returned.

He had prepared speeches inside his cell.

Accusations.

Promises.

Names of the dead.

None felt right anymore.

So he said the simplest thing.

“I am sorry I took so long.”

People began crying.

The King looked toward his wife.

Then his son.

“I discovered too late that a ruler can lose a kingdom without losing a battle.”

The Prince listened.

“A kingdom is lost whenever fear becomes more trusted than truth.”

The King looked across the square.

“My Regent imprisoned me.”

Boos erupted.

The King raised one hand.

Silence returned.

“But one man did not hold me beneath this palace for twelve years.”

The Prince turned slightly.

The King continued.

“He needed frightened guards.”

The Captain lowered his head.

“Threatened servants.”

The Royal Keeper closed his eyes.

“Officials who believed survival required silence.”

The Queen watched the crowd.

“And a court that learned asking questions was dangerous.”

The King leaned back, exhausted.

“So we will not repair this kingdom merely by punishing one traitor.”

That became the beginning of the new reign.

The King refused immediate coronation ceremonies.

He already had a crown.

What he needed was investigation.
