Otis is thirsty.
That much is obvious.
The nine-year-old English Bulldog lifts his head from the bedding inside his medical kennel and looks toward the stainless-steel water bowl only a short distance away.
Then he begins trying to reach it.
There is no normal walk.
Otis pushes with his front legs and shifts his exhausted body forward a few inches at a time.
His muscles have wasted badly after a prolonged period of inadequate care.
By the time he reaches the bowl, the effort alone has tired him.
Still, Otis lowers his muzzle.
He drinks.
A few laps.
Pause.
Another.
Then his head begins sinking.
His neck no longer seems able to hold it comfortably above the water.
Eventually, Otis stops drinking.
His chin comes to rest across the cold stainless-steel rim.
His eyes slowly close.
And instead of returning to his bed, Otis falls asleep beside the bowl he had barely enough strength to reach.
Otis Arrived With Almost No Reserve Left
Otis was not simply a little thin.
His body showed substantial loss of condition.
Muscle that should have supported his frame had diminished.
His limbs looked weak.
Ordinary movements required visible effort.
For a senior dog, that level of deterioration was especially concerning.
A younger, well-conditioned animal may have more physical reserve when illness or inadequate nutrition occurs.
Otis did not appear to have much left.
Severe Muscle Loss Changes Everything
Muscles do far more than allow a dog to run.
They help him stand.
Walk.
Balance.
Hold his head up.
Change positions.
Breathe efficiently.
Get to food and water.
And rise after resting.
When muscle loss becomes severe, activities that normally require almost no thought can become exhausting.
Otis demonstrated that every time he tried to drink.
The water was close.
His body made it feel far away.
His Head Was Heavy Because His Neck Was Weak
An English Bulldog has a substantial head relative to its body.
Normally, healthy muscles support that weight without difficulty.
Otis was different.
After drinking for a short time, his neck began to tire.
