Then the rest of her.
Moose looked enormous standing above her.
Pepper looked almost impossibly small underneath him.
And then both dogs became still.
The Most Important Change Would Be Pepper Having a Choice
Nobody needed Pepper to prove that she could sleep alone.
That was not the point.
If she sometimes chose to sleep beside Moose, that could simply remain part of their relationship.
The meaningful progress would be seeing that darkness no longer left her with only one response.
Maybe she would choose the covered bed.
Maybe she would curl against Moose's side instead of crawling beneath him.
Maybe one evening she would notice the lights dim, lift her head, and remain exactly where she was.
Those would all represent something Pepper did not appear to have when she first arrived:
Options.
For Now, the Lights Still Change Everything
During the day, Pepper can be found sleeping by herself.
Moose may be several feet away.
Nothing about the scene suggests that the little Chihuahua mix needs to be touching him every moment.
Then evening comes.
The shared kennel becomes quiet.
The lights go out.
Pepper's head rises.
She gets to her feet and walks directly toward Moose.
He remains standing as she ducks beneath him.
First her head disappears.
Then her shoulders.
Then her entire little body squeezes between his four legs until Moose is standing directly above her.
Pepper turns once.
She lowers herself.
And finally, she stops moving.
Staff cannot know exactly what darkness means to Pepper.
They cannot know what she remembers from those months spent outside without a roof.
They only know what she does when the room goes dark.
Pepper looks for the biggest familiar dog in the kennel.
And until she is ready to settle, Moose quietly becomes the roof she never had.
