Wells swallowed.

“Adrian Ross.”

Another pause.

Longer.

Then a different voice came on.

A supervisor.

“23-4, do not transport.”

“Repeat, do not transport.”

“U.S. Marshals and county command responding to your location.”

Wells’s face changed.

For the first time, Adrian saw fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Those were different.

Pike stepped closer.

“Sarge, take them off.”

Wells snapped:

“Shut up.”

“Dispatch just—”

“I heard dispatch.”

“He’s the guy.”

“I said shut up.”

Adrian looked at Pike.

Then Wells.

“Sergeant.”

“What?”

“You should remove the cuffs.”

Wells leaned forward.

“Don’t start giving orders.”

Adrian’s voice remained calm.

“I am not giving you an order.”

“I am telling you that every additional second is now a deliberate choice made after verification.”

That sentence landed.

Wells looked toward Pike’s body camera.

Then toward the convenience-store security dome above the door.

Then toward the truck driver who still held his phone.

Adrian saw the arithmetic.

Not law.

Consequences.

Wells reached for the key.

His hands shook slightly.

The cuffs came off.

Adrian lowered his arms slowly.

His shoulders ached.

He looked at his wrists.

Red marks.

Pike said:

“Sir, I’m sorry.”

Wells turned sharply.

“Do not apologize.”

Pike looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because we haven’t done anything wrong.”

Adrian looked at Wells.

The sentence interested him.

People often said we did nothing wrong before anyone accused them.

Defensiveness sought a verdict before evidence.

Adrian said:

“Then the record should protect you.”

Wells stared.

Headlights appeared at the highway entrance.

Two vehicles.

One black SUV.

One county command cruiser.

They entered quickly.

The black SUV stopped first.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Dana Brooks stepped out.

Forty-three.

Black woman.

Dark suit beneath protective jacket.

She took in scene instantly.

Adrian’s dirty uniform.

Blood at cheek.

Cuffs in Wells’s hand.

Pike looking pale.

Wells standing rigid.

Brooks’s face became unreadable.

“Judge Ross?”

Wells’s head turned.

Judge.

Not general.

Judge.

Adrian saw the second revelation hit him.

Brooks moved toward Adrian.

“Sir, are you injured?”

“Minor.”

“Were you under arrest?”

Wells answered.
