Does she seem painful when lying down?

Is her appetite normal?

Is she gaining or maintaining appropriate weight?

Behavior and medicine belong in the same picture.

Poppy cannot describe symptoms.

She demonstrates them.

Eventually, Her Blanket May Become Just a Blanket Again

That would be a meaningful change.

Poppy might still enjoy lying in sunshine.

Many dogs do.

She may still carry bedding simply because she likes it.

But the urgency could disappear.

No violent trembling.

No immediate search for the warmest patch.

No need to spend several minutes dragging her bed across concrete before she can settle.

She could choose the sun instead of appearing to need it.

For Now, Poppy Still Waits for the Door

The indoor-outdoor run is quiet.

Poppy stands near her bed.

Her nearly hairless body begins to tremble.

The treated areas across her skin remain visible.

Then the door opens.

Morning sunlight has reached part of the outdoor concrete.

Poppy sees it.

She turns away from the doorway.

Walks back to her blanket.

Lowers her head.

And closes her teeth around one corner.

She pulls.

The fabric moves several inches.

Poppy releases it.

Steps forward.

Grabs it again.

Another pull.

Then another.

Her small body is still shaking while she works.

Finally, the blanket reaches the sunlight.

Poppy drops it.

She steps into the middle.

Turns.

Then curls herself as tightly as her sensitive skin allows.

Her head lowers.

Her eyes close.

The trembling begins to ease.

Around her is a large shelter run with a bed, walls, and protection from the weather.

Yet Poppy has chosen one small square of sunlight and physically dragged her own bedding there because, right now, it seems to be the place where her body can finally become still.

And that is what makes her strange little routine so important:

Why does Poppy still have to drag her own bed across the floor and chase a patch of sunlight before her nearly hairless body can finally stop shivering long enough to rest?
