Chapter 1

Ruby was hungry enough to stop beside a discarded container of food near a rural Tennessee gas station.

The 7-year-old hound mix was painfully thin.

Road dust covered her coat.

Her hips stood out beneath her skin.

But when she found the food, Ruby did not hesitate for long.

She lowered her head and began eating quickly.

For a few moments, she managed to stay upright.

Then her back legs started trembling.

The shaking became stronger.

Her hindquarters dropped.

And Ruby ended up lying directly on the pavement beside the food.

She did not leave.

She simply adjusted her body, stretched her head toward the container, and kept eating from the ground.

Hunger Wasn't Ruby's Only Problem

Anyone watching from a distance might initially have seen an underweight stray taking advantage of discarded food.

Then Ruby tried to stand.

That changed the picture.

Her hind legs did not appear capable of supporting her for long.

She could get upright.

She could take steps.

But maintaining that position was another matter.

Within a short period, the muscles in her rear legs began visibly trembling.

Then they gave way.

Nobody Needed to Make Her Stand Again to Confirm It

Ruby had already shown enough.

There was no reason to lift her back onto four feet simply to see whether she would collapse a second time.

The priority was getting her somewhere safe and determining why she was so thin and weak.

Her difficulty standing could have multiple possible causes.

Severe loss of body condition can reduce strength.

Pain can change weight bearing.

Orthopedic disease can affect mobility.

Neurological problems can interfere with the way the hind limbs function.

Other illness can contribute to weakness as well.

Ruby's posture was a symptom.

It was not a diagnosis.

The Road Had Been Asking Too Much From Her Body

Ruby had been found wandering along a rural road.

That meant a dog who struggled to remain standing had still been moving from place to place.

Every stretch of pavement required effort.

Every search for water or food required more.

There was no supportive bed nearby when her legs became tired.

No one carrying a bowl to where she was already lying.

If Ruby needed something, she had to reach it with the body she had.

The discarded food near the gas station showed exactly how difficult that had become.

She Wanted the Food More Than Her Legs Could Support Her

Ruby's appetite made the scene especially striking.

She did not stop eating because she fell.

Once her hindquarters reached the pavement, she repositioned herself and continued.

That could easily be turned into a story about determination.

But determination was not what Ruby needed from her body.

She needed relief.
