But it may also be the thing that eventually makes safe capture possible.

One Evening, Rusty Barely Reaches It

He has spent part of the day moving around the lot.

By evening, the injured leg appears worse.

Rusty crosses slowly.

He stops.

His head lowers.

For several seconds, he simply stands on three legs.

Then he continues.

The sign is ahead.

A vehicle passes on the road.

Rusty looks up but does not run.

He cannot.

He takes several more uneven steps.

Finally, he reaches the base.

His front legs fold first.

Then his body drops carefully onto one side.

Rusty curls.

His head settles over the swollen paw.

His eyes close.

Tomorrow Will Require the Same Leg Again

That is the problem with survival while injured.

There is no recovery day.

Rusty cannot decide to spend a week resting.

He needs food tomorrow.

He needs water.

If the weather changes, he may need another place to lie down.

If something frightens him, he may need to move.

The leg does not get to heal simply because it hurts.

Rusty's environment keeps demanding that he use his body.

Getting Him Off the Road Would Only Be the First Step

Once safely contained, Rusty would need a veterinary assessment.

The swollen limb would be examined.

Pain control could be provided appropriately.

Imaging might reveal whether bone or joint structures are involved.

Wounds could be checked.

His temperature and hydration could be assessed.

His thin body condition would need a nutritional plan.

Only then could anyone begin answering the biggest medical question.

Can the leg recover normally?

He May Need a Period Where Food Comes to Him

For perhaps the first time in a long while, Rusty could eat without searching a parking lot.

Water could remain clean and nearby.

A padded resting surface could stay dry.
