Sadie is 5 years old, an American Bulldog recovering in a shelter after arriving in critical condition.
Large areas of her coat are missing.
Several wounds are still being treated and bandaged.
Her body is severely depleted after an extended period living outside.
Inside the recovery kennel, Sadie spends most of her time lying on a towel because she does not have enough strength to remain on her feet for long.
But when she hears activity in the hallway, she still tries.
Sadie plants her front paws.
She pushes against the bedding.
Her body begins to rise.
For a few seconds, she manages to hold herself up.
Then the shaking starts.
Her legs tremble so badly that she cannot maintain the position.
Slowly, Sadie sinks back down onto the towel.
Sadie Still Tries to Get Up When She Hears Someone
The movement begins with sound.
Footsteps pass outside.
A voice carries through the hallway.
Sadie notices.
She does not rush toward the kennel door.
Her body cannot move that way right now.
Instead, she shifts her front legs underneath herself and begins pushing.
Her chest rises from the bedding.
Her shoulders follow.
For a moment, it looks like Sadie might make it all the way onto her feet.
Then her body begins trembling.
The shaking becomes visible through her legs and shoulders.
Sadie tries to hold herself there.
Only a few seconds later, her strength disappears.
She lowers herself again.
There is no sudden collapse.
Her body simply cannot maintain the effort.
Sadie folds back down onto the towel and rests.
Standing for a Few Seconds Takes Almost Everything She Has
For a healthy 5-year-old American Bulldog, standing up would be automatic.
For Sadie, it has become a physical task.
Her body is severely depleted.
She has multiple healing wounds.
Large patches of hair are gone.
After an extended period outside, her strength is limited enough that even getting upright requires significant effort.
The movement may look small from the hallway.
Sadie braces.
Pushes.
Rises.
Shakes.
Then lies down again.
But those few seconds show exactly how weak she currently is.
She is not simply choosing to remain on the floor.
Her body has very little endurance left.
