“I mean it.”

“I know.”

Alaric kissed her.

Their first kiss happened without prophecy.

Without ritual.

Without a Queen watching.

No storm.

No magic.

No audience.

Just wind over cliffs.

When they separated, Alaric looked down at himself.

“So that was the curse?”

Elara frowned.

“What?”

“It broke because you chose me freely.”

“Apparently.”

“Very storybook.”

“Embarrassingly.”

He smiled.

Then the ground shook.

Both froze.

Elara groaned.

“No.”

A familiar roar came from the western sky.

They looked up.

The Storm Wyrm flew overhead.

Massive.

Black.

Free.

It circled once.

Then disappeared into clouds.

Alaric laughed.

“What?”

Elara looked at him.

“I think it came to laugh at us.”

“That seems fair.”

They married in autumn.

Elara wore deep green.

Alaric wore black and silver.

No one referred to her as the woman who saved the Beast.

She forbade it.

At the wedding feast, one ambassador made the mistake.

“To the Lady who redeemed the cursed Prince.”

Elara stood.

The room quieted.

She raised her cup.

“No.”

The ambassador froze.

Elara looked toward Alaric.

“He survived eighteen years without me.”

Alaric smiled.

“He protected strangers who feared him.”

She continued.

“He refused to use my bloodline to free himself.”

She looked back at the court.

“I did not save him.”

Then she lifted the cup.

“I chose him.”

Alaric stood beside her.

“And she did not tame me.”

He smiled.

“She simply proved I was never required to become smaller to deserve a place beside her.”

The court raised cups.

Years passed.

Alaric became King after the council confirmed his inheritance.

Elara became Queen.

But she hated that title when used like a cage.

So they ruled differently.

The throne hall doors stayed open more often.

People could petition directly four times a year.

The east tower became an archive documenting Seraphine’s crimes rather than a prison.

The old ritual chambers beneath the palace were sealed.

Not hidden.

Mapped.

Recorded.

Known.

“No more secrets becoming weapons,” Elara said.

Seraphine lived another nine years.

She never apologized completely.

Some people cannot.

But in her final year, she requested Elara.

Elara went alone.

The former Queen looked frail.

“You won.”

Elara sat.

“This was never a contest.”

Seraphine laughed weakly.

“Everything is.”

“That belief ruined you.”

Silence.

Seraphine looked toward the window.

“Is he happy?”

“Yes.”

“Human?”

“Yes.”

“Do you miss the Beast?”

Elara hesitated.

“Sometimes.”

The old woman smiled.

“That is strange.”

“No.”

Elara stood.

“That is love.”

Seraphine looked at her.

“Did your mother hate me?”

“Yes.”

The answer surprised her.
