He was standing less than fifteen feet away.

Dark sweatshirt.

Backpack.

Knife.

Laura immediately understood.

There was someone inside her house.

And her son was downstairs.

She did not scream.

Not immediately.

Her eyes moved to the stairs.

The young man saw it.

He seemed to realize exactly what she was thinking.

Laura stepped backward.

"Get out of my house."

The intruder said nothing.

"Take whatever you want and leave."

His breathing became faster.

He looked toward the staircase.

Laura moved between him and the stairs.

That changed everything.

Until that moment, he had been a burglar moving quietly through what he probably believed was an almost empty house.

Now someone had seen his face.

Now he was trapped upstairs.

And between him and the easiest exit stood a mother who knew her child was sleeping below.

Laura repeated herself.

"Just leave."

The young man whispered something.

She could barely hear him.

"I can't."

Laura stared at the knife.

"Put that down."

"I don't want to hurt anybody."

"Then put it down."

He did not.

Downstairs, Ethan began waking.

The voices had reached him.

He sat up slowly.

At first, he looked confused.

Then he heard his mother.

Her tone was different from anything he had heard before.

Controlled.

But frightened.

Ethan got off the sofa.

Upstairs, Laura heard movement below.

Her stomach dropped.

"Ethan, stay downstairs!"

The intruder looked toward the stairs again.

Then Ethan appeared at the bottom.

"Mom?"

Laura immediately shouted.

"Go outside. Now."

The young man panicked.

"No!"

Ethan stopped.

The intruder came down several steps.

Laura moved after him.

"Don't go near him."

The young man raised the knife slightly.

"Nobody move."

The entire house became silent.

The television was still playing in the background.

A cartoon character on the screen laughed.

The sound felt almost unreal against what was happening on the staircase.

Ethan looked at the stranger.

Then at his mother.

Laura tried to keep her voice calm.

"He's a child."

The young man swallowed.

"I know."

"Then let him go."

"I said nobody move."

Laura began to realize he was not behaving like someone who had entered the house planning to take hostages.

He looked terrified.

His hand was shaking.

The knife was shaking with it.

That did not make him safe.

A frightened person holding a knife can be more unpredictable than someone who appears calm.

But Laura saw something else.

The intruder had already passed Ethan once.

He had found the boy sleeping and had left him alone.

She did not know that yet.

But the hesitation she saw now told her he did not want to hurt the child.

She decided to use that.

"You don't have to make this worse."

The young man shook his head.

"You don't understand."

"Then tell me."

He looked toward the front door.

Then the windows.

Then back toward Laura.

He seemed to be thinking about running.

But before he could decide, a sound came from outside.

The garage door began moving.

Laura suddenly remembered.

The garage.

She had left it open.

Earlier, before going upstairs, something in the back of her mind had bothered her.

Then she remembered the garage door.

She had used a smart-home control on an upstairs tablet to close it remotely.

She had pressed the button only minutes earlier.

But by the time the garage door came down, the intruder was already inside.

Now the sound of the door closing made the young man realize his easiest exit had disappeared.

He looked even more panicked.

He moved back up the stairs.

"Come here."

Laura shook her head.

"No."

"Both of you."

He pointed the knife toward the second floor.

"Upstairs."

Laura took Ethan's hand.

Her mind was racing.

She could not fight him while holding her son.

She could not run past him safely.

So she did what he asked.

Slowly.

Step by step.

The three of them moved upstairs.

The young man directed them into the master bedroom.

Then he pushed a dresser partly in front of the door.

He kept looking through the blinds.

Laura sat on the edge of the bed with Ethan beside her.

Her son was trembling.
