"I can leave a message."

I gave her my address and described the box.

Then I waited.

That evening, the HOA president called me.

Her tone was brisk.

"I understand there's some confusion about a delivery."

I sat at my desk.

"Not much confusion. I have video of you taking a package from my porch."

She laughed.

"Oh, that."

I didn't answer.

She continued.

"I was conducting a neighborhood safety inspection."

I stared at the wall.

"And the package?"

"It had been left in an exposed location."

"On my front porch."

"Exactly."

I took a slow breath.

"Where is it now?"

She hesitated.

"It was transferred for secure handling."

"Where?"

"Through the appropriate community process."

I leaned back.

"Ma'am, I didn't authorize your receiving service."

Her tone changed.

"Perhaps you should have."

I closed my eyes.

Then I asked again.

"Where is my package?"

She sighed.

"You're being unnecessarily confrontational."

I looked toward the video.

"I'd like my property returned."

She spoke slowly, as though explaining something to a difficult child.

"Willow Brook Estates has standards. Packages left in plain view create a security concern and negatively affect the appearance of the neighborhood."

I stared.

"A box on my porch creates a security concern?"

"Yes."

"And taking it makes the neighborhood safer?"

"That's the purpose of the program."

I thought about the promotional brochure.

The monthly fees.

The phrase Premium Parcel Protection.

Then I asked a simple question.

"If this is an approved service, where do I sign for the package?"

She was silent.

I waited.

Finally, she said, "I'll have the office review the matter."

Then she ended the call.

My headphones never appeared.

I told my wife everything that evening.

She sat across from me at the kitchen table, watching the footage on my laptop.

When the HOA president lifted the package, my wife leaned forward.

"That's her."

I nodded.

"Definitely."

She watched the woman leave the porch.

Then she looked toward me.

"Did she say where the package went?"

"No."

"What did she say?"

"That it was secured through the appropriate community process."

My wife stared.

"That isn't a location."

I smiled without humor.

"I noticed."

She looked at the tracking information.

"Did the office give you a receipt?"

"No."

"Did they send a notice?"

"No."

"Did anybody ask permission?"

I shook my head.

She leaned back.

"Then why are we calling this a receiving service?"

I looked toward the window.

"That's what I'm trying to understand."

My wife closed the laptop gently.

"Document everything."

I nodded.

She continued.

"And don't turn this into a personal shouting match with her."

I smiled faintly.

"I wasn't planning to."

She raised an eyebrow.
